Box Score JOHNSON CITY, TENN. -- Tianna Tarter scored 19 points and keyed a second half surge that lifted East Tennessee State to a 72-61 victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's basketball action Monday evening at Brooks Gym.
The win gave East Tennessee State (16-8, 8-1 SoCon) the season sweep of Furman (15-10, 4-5 SoCon) and halted the Paladins' three-game winning streak and run of five consecutive victories in Johnson City.
Tarter tallied 14 of her 19 points in the second period, combining her tally with eight rebounds and four assists to lead the Buccaneers, who got 13 points from Shamauria Bridges, 12 points from Maria Bond, and 10 points by Serena Clark.
Furman was paced by Holli Wilkins, who registered 19 points and, in the process, became the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 points. The junior All-SoCon forward from Atlanta, Ga., now has 1,001 points in her Paladin tenure.
Kelsey Ellis was the only other Paladin to reach double figures, tallying 13 points on the strength of 3-for-6 shooting from 3-point range. Senior forward Brittany Hodges played only 19 minutes before fouling out with seven points and nine rebounds.
Furman battled back from a nine-point deficit with five minutes remaining in the first half to go into halftime down, 32-31.
A Willkins layup two minutes into the second period gave the Paladins a 35-34 lead, but was erased on the ensuing possession with a Bridges jump shot, sparking a 6-0 ETSU spurt that included baskets by Clark and Tarter for a 40-35 Buccaneer lead.
The Paladins trailed 54-49 with just under seven minutes remaining when Tarter converted a 3-point play to key a 7-0 run that put the Buccaneer up, 61-49, with 5:42 to go.
Furman answered with their own 7-0 spurt behind two free throws and a 3-pointer by Bunn to make it 61-56, but a Tarter 3-ball with three minutes to go pushed the lead back to eight points and put the Bucs in control.
ETSU connected on 18-of-38 shots (47.4%) in the second half to finish at 43.1 percent for the game, while Furman shot just 38.1 percent for the contest (24-for-63).
The Buccaneers notched a 46-38 rebounding advantage, including a 17-10 margin on the offensive glass, which led to 17-8 differential on second chance points.
Furman returns home for its next two games, entertaining Mercer on Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. game and Samford on Monday in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
