Northeastern Holds Off Paladins, 3-1
Greenville, S.C. -- Northeastern struck for a pair of first half goals and held off a late Furman rally to down the Paladins, 3-1, in women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.
Kayla Cappuzzo put the Huskies in front in the sixth minute by running onto a misplayed back pass by the Paladins and slotting a shot into the right corner at the 5:23 mark. Carly Wilhelm doubled the lead on another Furman mistake in the 32nd minute. A turnover by the Paladins gave Cappuzzo a clear run into the box from the left side. She fired a shot that was saved by Rose Hull, but Carly Wilhelm tapped in the rebound to double the Huskies' lead.
The two-time defending CAA champion Huskies looked to by on their way to a shutout in the 63rd minute when Furman earned a free kick and freshman Virginia Poe was pulled down in the box to win the Paladins a penalty kick. Senior Stephanie DeVita stepped up to fire a shot past Northeastern's Nathalie Nidetch to trim the lead to 2-1. The score marked DeVita's third of the season and 53rd career goal in 66 matches.
Furman began to earn more of the possession and nearly pulled even with under 10 minutes to go as Sanon Williams flicked a long ball into the path of Molly Dwyer, but the sophomore's one-timer was hit wide right.
Northeastern put the game away with 3:21 left on a driving right-footed shot from 15 yards out by Hannah Lopiccolo on an assist from Nicole Gorman.
The Huskies (1-1-0) finished with a 24-6 edge in total shots and 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. Hull made four first half saves for the Paladins, while Northeastern's Jill Quinn picked up the win without having to stop a shot in 45 minutes of action.
The Paladins (1-1-0) return to action on Friday when they host North Greenville in a 7 p.m. match at Stone Stadium.
