Shah Fires Furman Past USC Upstate, 1-0

Box Score

Greenville, S.C. -- Sophomore Rachel Shah scored off of a set piece in the 65th minute to lift Furman to a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate in non-conference women's soccer action on Thursday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.

The win improved the Paladins to 3-2-0 on the season, while Upstate slipped to 1-3-1.

After the Paladins earned a free kick wide on the left-hand side in front of its bench, sophomore Sanon Williams lofted a ball into the middle of the box that glanced off of a defender and into the path of Shah who poked a shot past Upstate's Ellen Bright with a sliding effort from inside the six-yard box at 64:55.  It marked the first career goal for the Alpharetta, Ga., product.

Furman created numerous chances in the first half, but the Paladins were unable to break through.  Senior Jamie Alexander forced three saves in the opening 45 minutes and fellow senior Kristen Baker pounded the woodwork twice in the opening half on set pieces.

Alexander came close to breaking the scoreless draw early in the second half when she received a lofted ball at the penalty spot but her uncontested volley flashed wide of the left post.

After allowing seven shots in the first half, Furman limited the Spartans to just one second half shot.  The Paladins posted an 18-8 edge in shots and 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Senior Maggie Grisell notched two saves to earn the shutout and improve to 2-0-0 between the pipes.  Bright recorded five saves in a losing effort for USC Upstate.

Furman returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Davidson, N.C., to face the Davidson Wildcats.  Kickoff against the Wildcats is slated for 2 p.m.
