Box Score Greensboro, N.C. -- Ricky Chavez connected on a shot from 25 yards out in the 108th minute as UNCG claimed a 1-0, double overtime victory over 10-man Furman in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Saturday night at UNCG Stadium.
The loss dropped the Paladins to 5-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the SoCon, while the Spartans improved to 6-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in the league.
Less than two minutes from full time, Chavez took a pass from Rouven Wahlfeldt and rocketed a shot from outside the box into the far side netting at the 107:21 mark for the lone score of the night.
Both teams held their share of possession and created opportunities, but UNCG gained an advantage in the 79th minute when Furman's Dalton Souder was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the night on a foul near midfield. Paladin goalkeeper Jonathan Smith made several key saves down the stretch and Furman created the only two chances of the first overtime. UNCG began to turn the possession in its favor in the second overtime and had a pair of shots blocked before Chavez's decisive strike.
Furman managed its only shot on target in the first half and had its best scoring chance erased by a foul midway through the second half after the Paladins had headed in a long cross. UNCG finished with a 16-10 edge in total shots.
The Spartans' Logan Rohde stopped one shot to earn the victory in goal. Smith totaled seven saves in the loss for Furman.
The Paladins return to Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium next Saturday at 7 p.m. to host The Quinn Game for Downs Syndrome Awareness when Wofford visits for the first of two meetings this season between Furman and the Terriers.
