Wofford Edges Furman In Regular Season Finale, 2-1

Spartanburg, S.C. -- Kyle Nelson scored in the 82nd minute to hand Wofford a 2-1 victory over Furman in the Southern Conference men's soccer regular season finale for both schools on Saturday night at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

The defeat left Furman at 6-8-3 overall and 2-6-2 in the SoCon, while Wofford concluded the regular season at 11-6-0 overall and 6-4-0 in league play.

Furman will open play in the SoCon Men's Soccer Championship as the No. 5 seed and will travel to face No. 4 seed UNCG in Greensboro, N.C., on Saturday, November 5, at 7 p.m. The winner will face ETSU in the SoCon semifinals on Thursday, November 10, in Greensboro at 3:30 p.m.

At the 81:42 mark, Nelson took a pass inside the six-yard box from Charlie Heffron and poked in a shot to break the 1-1 tie and give Wofford its second win over the Paladins this season. The goal marked Nelson's fourth score of the season.

Furman pushed forward in the final minutes with senior Bobby Edet testing the Wofford defense twice, but the Paladins were unable to find the equalizer as they lost on a goal in the final 10 minutes for the fourth time during the month of October.

Wofford grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 22-minute mark when Austin Tuggle fired a shot inside the far post from close range. Connor Donohue and Lucas Altman were credited with assists on the go-ahead goal.

The Paladins answered in the 26th minute. Aigbekan Nosegbe played a cross to the near post and freshman Emery May poked in a shot from two yards out to tie the match.

The Terriers finished with a 19-12 advantage in total shot attempts and 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Joe Wichmann made three saves to earn the victory for Wofford, while freshman Max Fisher made five stops in a losing effort for the Paladins.
