Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Cierra Carter scored a career high 19 points, including a pair of baskets late in the game, to help Furman beat Wofford, 70-64, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.
The victory halted a four-game losing skid by Furman (12-13, 5-5 SoCon) and improved the Paladins to 24-0 all-time versus Wofford (7-17, 1-9 SoCon) in Greenville. The loss was the sixth straight for the Terriers, who were paced in scoring by Ashton Fleming's 15 points.
Carter drained 7-of-14 shots from the field and converted 4-of-6 free throws to top her previous career high of 17 points registered in a 71-52 victory over Winthrop in late November. The sophomore forward from Columbia, S.C., also claimed a game high 12 rebounds for the Paladins, who never trailed in the contest that was close for the better part of the final three quarters due to Wofford's solid 3-point shooting effort. The Terriers, who entered the game shooting 25.6 percent from beyond the arc, made 9-of-19 3-pointers (47.4 percent).
Holli Wilkins followed Carter with 16 points and Whitney Bunn finished with 13 points and 10 assists to pull within one assist of Furman's career record of 428 currently held by Lucy Dunn (1985-88).
The Paladins grabbed a 22-12 after one quarter and led 37-30 at intermission after the Terriers' Kentra Washington bottomed out a shot in the final second of the first half.
Washington scored two baskets and converted a pair of free throws to spark a 10-3 run that tied the game at 40-40 a little over three minutes into the third quarter, but Carter answered with two free throws at the 4:48 mark to put Furman back up, 42-40.
The Paladins pushed the lead to 51-45 following a Bunn steal and layup with less than two minutes to go in the period. Wofford responded, however, behind a Fleming layup and Chloe Wanink 3-pointer from the corner to send the contest to the fourth period with Furman ahead, 51-50.
The Paladins' led 58-54 when Wofford's Sarah Traynor stripped the cords on a 3-pointer to pull the Terriers to within a point at the 7:16 mark. Following a stretch of scoreless possessions by both teams, Carter was whistled for a foul while defending Washington approximately six feet from the basket. The two players were then assessed technical fouls and, upon a lengthy video review, Washington was called for second technical and ejected from the game.
The double technical sent Furman's Kelsey Ellis to the free throw line, where she drained both chances to start a decisive 6-0 spurt that included a layup by Kaitlyn Duncan and Carter layup that put the Paladins up 64-57 with four minutes remaining.
The Terriers battled back to get within a point at 65-64 on a Chloe Wanink 3-pointer at the 1:30 mark, but the Paladins answered behind Carter, whose layup and free throw pushed the advantage to 68-64 with 39 seconds remaining.
Bunn's two free throws with 17 seconds showing on the clock put the game away for Furman.
Washington finished with 14 points, and Grayson Pinholster and Wanink tallied 13 each to round out Wofford's double-figure scoring effort.
Furman plays host to UNCG next Thursday in a 7:00 p.m. game.
