Box Score Greenville, S.C. – Behind goals from nine different players, Furman women's lacrosse cruised to a 15-8 win over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday night in Furman's 2016 home opener. The win, Furman's first of the season, moves the Paladins to 1-2 on the year, while the loss drops the Runnin' Bulldogs to 0-5.
Devon Horine led the way for Furman, scoring a season-high four goals, while Ashley Trice, Abby Shield, and Meg Lingo each added two. Trice and freshman Hannah Feinberg each dished out two assists and Paige Gamble won a team-high nine draws. Furman won 18 draws to Gardner-Webb's seven, and out-shot the Runnin' Bulldogs 33-14.
Ashley Trice scored the game's first goal just 20 seconds in, and Furman added four more scores in the next five minutes to push its lead to 5-0, forcing a Gardner-Webb timeout. The Runnin' Bulldogs cut the Paladin lead to 5-1 with 19:11 to go in the half, but Furman netted three-straight, including back-to-back goals by Horine, to push the lead back to 8-1 with 11:35 to go.
Gardner-Webb cut the Furman lead to 8-3, but Horine completed the hat trick and pushed the Furman lead back to 9-3 with 4:07 to go in the first half. Shortly before halftime, freshman Isabelle Walsh scored her first career goal to send the teams to the break with the Paladins holding a 10-3 lead.
The teams traded goals to open the second half, before Meg Lingo and Devon Horine scored back-to-back goals to push the Furman lead to nine at 14-5 with 12:25 remaining. The Runnin' Bulldogs rattled off three-straight goals to cut the Furman lead to 14-8, but Alyssa Cooper netted her first goal of the season with 54 seconds remaining to secure the 15-8 win for the Paladins.
Gardner-Webb was led by Alex Fusco with five goals, while Emma Rufolo added two. Cassidy McDowell made eight saves for the Runnin' Bulldogs and Sadie Bryant won a team-high four draws.
Furman is back in action on Tuesday, March 1, as the Paladins welcome St. Francis (Pa.) to Paladin Stadium for a 6:00 p.m. opening draw.
