Box Score CHATTANOOGA, TENN. -- Jasmine Joyner scored 19 points, claimed 14 rebounds, and blocked five shots to pace Chattanooga to a 61-46 victory over Furman in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday afternoon at UTC Arena.
The win gave Chattanooga (15-7, 6-2 SoCon) the regular season sweep of Furman (11-12, 4-4 SoCon) and marked the Mocs' 14th consecutive triumph over the Paladins in Chattanooga since 2003. Joyner, who torched Furman for 21 points, 20 rebounds, and six blocks in the 56-50 win in Greenville on Jan. 9, again proved to be a wrecking ball against the Paladins, draining 9 of 11 shots and adding a free throw in powering UTC's attack.
Keiana Gilbert contributed 14 points and Queen Alford chipped in 11 points for UTC, which overcame cold shooting early to finish the game connecting on 44.6 percent from the field (25x56), including 51.9 percent (14x27) in the second half.
Furman placed three players in double figures, led by Whitney Bunn's 12 points. Holli Wilkins added 11, and Kelsey Ellis accounted for 10.
The Paladins used an Ellis 3-pointer and two baskets by Cierra Carter to grab a 11-3 lead off the opening tip, but Chattanooga answered with a decisive 17-0 run and by holding Furman scoreless for over eight minutes to take command of the contest.
Sydney Vanlandingham's basket with 2:46 remaining in the first quarter ignited the run, which saw the Mocs rally for a 12-11 lead by the quarter's end and continue the run by scoring the first eight points of the second quarter on the strength of 3-pointers by Gilbert and Alford. Kaitlyn Duncan's basket at the 4:33 mark gave the Paladins their first points of the period and first tally since the 3:02 mark of the first quarter, but by then UTC owned a 20-13 advantage on the way to a 29-19 lead at the break.
A Bunn jump shot three minutes into the second half pulled Furman to with 31-26, and two possessions later Ellis' second 3-pointer of the contest got the Paladins to within 33-29. The Mocs answered, though, with an 8-0 spurt, capped by Moses Johnson stickback off an offensive rebound to give UTC a 41-29 advantage with 2:45 left in the third quarter.
The Mocs outscored Furman 36-24 in the paint, fashioned a 7-0 advantage on points off turnovers, and enjoyed a 10-2 margin in bench scoring.
Furman drained just 4-of-19 attempts from 3-point range and finished the game shooting 37.7 percent from the field.
The Paladins play at ETSU on Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. game.
