Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Tyah Hunter delivered the tying and go-ahead baskets down the stretch and blocked a potential game tying 3-point shot in the final second to help Furman complete a fourth quarter rally that beat Davidson, 65-62, in women's basketball action Wednesday evening at Timmons Arena.
The win improved Furman to 2-0 on the season heading into Saturday's 2:00 p.m. home game against Kennesaw State. Davidson fell to 1-2 on the campaign.
Trailing 57-52 with just under eight minutes remaining, the Paladins rallied to tie the game at 58-58 on Hunter's layup on an assist from freshman teammate Jarya Outten with 5:46 remaining. A little over a minute later Hunter drew a foul and drained two free throws to give Furman a 60-58 lead, its first since the first period.
The Paladins completed a pivotal 10-1 fourth quarter surge with a Stephania Oramas floater in the lane for a 62-58 lead.
Davidson's Mackenzie Latt's layup with 20 seconds to go pulled Davidson to within 64-62, and after an Oramas free throw pushed the advantage back to three, the Wildcats' attempt to tie the game was denied when Hunter blocked a 3-point attempt from the corner by the Wildcats' Justine Lyon just prior to the final buzzer.
Furman trailed 33-27 at intermission but pulled to within 53-50 after three periods to set up the decisive fourth quarter.
Cierra Carter's 16 points, crafted on 5-of-8 shooting and 2-of-3 3-pointers, paced Furman, which got 10 points and nine rebounds from DeAnneisha Jackson. Oramas finished with nine points and seven assists while playing the entire 40 minutes.
Davidson freshman Katie Turner led all scorers with 23 points, highlighted by 6-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats, however, struggled from the field, shooting just 33.3 percent (23x69) while the Paladins converted 24-of-59 shots (40.7%).
Latt's 13 caroms led all rebounders and helped Davidson forge a 47-40 advantage on the boards.
