Davidson's 3-Pointer Lifts Furman Past Ohio, 70-68

Box Score

WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. -- Le'Jzae Davidson sank a 3-pointer with one second remaining on the clock to deliver a 70-68 victory over Ohio in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the West Palm Beach Invitational, held at Student Life Center on the campus of Keiser University.

Davidson's game winning shot, which survived a desperation 3-pointer by Ohio's Dominquie Doseck at the buzzer, came after Doseck missed a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining.  Without calling a timeout Furman advanced the ball into the front court, where Davidson squared up from just beyond the top of the circle and tickled the net for the game winner. She finished with 22 points, connecting 9-of-16 shots and 4-of-9 treys.

"That was a super win," said Paladin head coach Jackie Carson following the contest.  "Ohio is a really tough opponent, and they did some things we hadn't seen, so I'm proud of the way our girls gutted it out and found a way.  I thought a big key for us was getting off to a good start, which is something we'd really struggled to do in several of our road games.  We did that today and shot the ball really well from the perimeter.  That was key because they (Ohio) really swarmed us inside.  Cierra and Le'Jzae were really on.  We needed them both."

Furman (8-3) led for much of the game mainly due to senior forward Cierra Carter, who poured in a career high 31 points.  The Columbia, S.C., product and All-SoCon performer found the mark on 9-of-16 shots, including 4-of-6 3-pointers, and was a perfect 9-of-9 at the free throw line.  The 31-point performance topped her previous best of 27 registered last year against Western Carolina.

The Paladins took the lead two minutes into the contest and stayed in front, leading by as many as nine points on three occasions until early in the fourth quarter when a 3-pointer by Taylor Agler put Ohio up, 61-60, marking the first of eight lead changes over the game's final seven minutes.

An Amani Burke 3-pointer gave the Bobcats a 66-64 lead with 4:17 to go, but Furman responded with three Carter free throws to go up, 67-66, at the 3:43 mark.

Ohio took its final lead on a Ciera Hooks layup with 3:20 remaining but failed to extend the advantage, suffering a turnover and missing its final three shots, including Doseck's 3-point attempt with 16 seconds left.

The Paladins also couldn't convert several opportunities late, turning it over twice and missing three shots before Davidson drilled the game winner.

Furman needed every bit of its 46.0 percent shooting effort (23x50), including a solid 8-of-17 performance from 3-point range, to secure the victory, as 21 turnovers almost derailed the Paladins, allowing Ohio to attempt 11 more shots (25x61).

The Paladins also made 16-of-21 free throws to the Bobcats' 8-of-16.

Ohio (5-4), which got 17 points from Agler and 16 from Burke, made 10-of-35 treys.

Furman posted a 40-27 rebounding advantage, getting eight boards apiece from Carter and DeAnneisha Jackson.

The Paladins wrap up their play in the West Palm Beach Invitational on Sunday with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Xavier.
