GREENVILLE, S.C. -- UNCG cruised to a 73-52 victory over Furman Saturday at Timmons Arena, snapping the Paladins' 10-game winning streak.
With the loss, Furman drops to 20-9 overall and 13-3 in the Southern Conference. UNCG improves to 20-8 overall and 11-4 in the league. Despite the loss, the Paladins maintained the SoCon lead and remain in the hunt for the league regular-season title.
The Spartans jumped out to a 14-4 lead following four-straight three-pointers by sophomore Francis Alonso, who connected on five of his first six shot from beyond the arc. UNCG held a nine-point lead with just over five minutes to go in the half when junior Geoff Beans hit a trey to ignite a 12-5 Furman run to end the half and bring the Paladins within two, 30-28.
A three-pointer by junior Devin Sibley gave the Paladins their first lead of the game at with 16:39 to go in the second half and Furman stretched the lead to three following a free throw by Daniel Fowler. The Spartans responded with an 11-2 run fueled by six-straight points by senior Diante Baldwin.
Furman cut the deficit to three, 52-49, at the eight minute mark of the second half before UNCG went on a 21-3 run to end the game.
Sibley led the Paladins with 18 points, while junior Daniel Fowler notched a team-high six rebounds and three assists.
Alonso paced the Spartans with 24 points, and Baldwin added 21 points and a team-high six assists. Rookie James Dickey led UNCG with 12 rebounds.
Furman will play at ETSU on Wednesday. The Bucs enter the game with a 22-6 overall record and a 12-3 SoCon mark.
