Furman Outlasts Old Dominion, 8-7

Greenville, S.C. – Ashley Trice scored with under four minutes remaining and Furman was able to use key stops down the stretch to down Old Dominion, 8-7, on Friday night in Paladin Stadium. The win, Furman's first win over ODU in school history, moves the Paladins to 7-4 on the year and 3-1 in ASUN play, while the loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 5-5 and 1-2 in ASUN play.

Trice tied for the Furman lead in goals (2) and assists (1) on the night, while Paige Gamble also added two goals and an assist of her own. Four other Paladins scored, while Samantha Eckels picked up a team high four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Maggie Friel had a solid night in goal, allowing seven goals while making 13 saves.

Old Dominion opened up an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals by Connor Carson, before Paige Gamble scored on a free position attempt to cut the lead to 2-1 with 22:47 remaining in the half. Kasie Lilly then picked up Furman's second free position goal of the afternoon to tie the game at two, just over a minute later. The Paladins continued on their scoring run, getting back-to-back goals from Gamble and Britt Douglass to take a 4-2 lead with 16:17 remaining in the half, forcing ODU to call a timeout.

The Lady Monarchs ended the Furman scoring run, cutting the lead to one at 4-3 with 14:52 remaining in the half, before Hannah Feinberg found a cutting Ashley Trice to give Furman the 5-3 lead. Megan Topper scored for ODU to cut the lead to 5-4, but Devon Horine netted the Paladins' fourth free-position shot of the half to push the lead back to two at 6-4 heading into halftime.

Old Dominion started the second half with a goal by Topper to cut the lead to 6-5. Both teams played solid defense for the next 10 minutes, before Gamble found Abby Shields for a point-blank goal to give the Paladins the 7-5 lead. The Lady Monarchs immediately responded with a goal by Carson to again cut the lead to one at 7-6 with just under 15 minutes remaining. Following an ODU timeout, Carson netted her fourth goal of the game for the Lady Monarchs, tying the game at 7 with 4:42 to go. Furman won the ensuing draw and after chasing down a loose ball, Trice netted her second goal of the game to give the Paladins the 8-7 lead with 3:46 to go. Maggie Friel made key saves down the stretch and Furman was able to run out the clock and down the Lady Monarchs, 8-7.

Connor Carson led ODU with four goals, while Megan Topper added two. Maggi Buckley allowed eight goals on the night while making 15 saves.

The Paladins are back in action on April 13, playing host to Delaware State at 4:00 p.m. in Paladin Stadium.
