Furman Falls To ETSU, 69-57

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Eric Haynes-Overton scored 24 points and East Tennessee State rode a late second quarter run and strong third period to defeat Furman, 69-57, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at Timmons Arena.

Haynes-Overton, the SoCon's top scoring freshman, converted 10-of-15 shots, including a 3-pointer, and 7-of-9 free throws to account for her 24 points.  The 5-foot-5 guard also collected four steals and two assists in playing all 40 minutes of the contest.

The Buccaneers (12-8, 4-0 SoCon), who claimed their fifth straight win, trailed 28-21 midway through the second quarter before closing the half with 17-5 run, capped by a Tianna Tarter 3-pointer and Sadasia Tipps basket over the final 22 seconds, to grab a 38-33 lead at intermission.

The run continued in the third period as ETSU scored the first six points — part of a 15-3 spurt that saw the Bucs go up 53-36 on a Haynes-Overton free throw with 3:08 to go in the quarter.

The Paladins (11-8, 2-3 SoCon) answered with a 12-0 burst to make it a game, sparked by a pair of baskets and a free throw by freshman foward Celena Taborn, to get within 53-48 following a DeAnneisha Jackson layup with five minutes remaining.

Furman trailed 55-50 when Haynes Overton blunted the comeback, scoring seven straight points to push the Bucs' lead to 62-50 at the 1:54 juncture.

Furman connected on 7-of-12 shots in the first quarter but cooled off considerably thereafter, going a combined 4-for-21 from the field in the second and third periods to finish at 35.3 percent for the game.

ETSU shot 43.5 percent, knocking down 27-of-62 shots.

Cierra carter led Furman in scoring with 18 points, and Jackson and Taborn finished with 11 points apiece.

Tarter added 18 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists for ETSU.

Furman plays host to Chattanooga on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
