Box Score Greenville, S.C. -- Redshirt sophomore Cole McLagan netted a hat trick and junior Rocky Guerra tied a school record with three assists to pace the Furman men's soccer team to an 8-0 victory over VMI on Senior Night Saturday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.
With its fourth consecutive win, Furman moved to 8-4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Conference, while VMI slid to 1-11-1 overall and 0-3 in league play. The victory improved the Paladins to 7-1-1 in their last nine matches and 5-0 at Stone Stadium this season.
"It was great to get the victory for our seniors on Senior Night and it's always great to get a shutout," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We were able to play a lot of people tonight and recognize our seniors in front of their friends and families."
After Josiah Baker tapped in a Rocky Guerra corner kick to open the scoring in the 12th minute, McLagan netted three straight goals to pick up just the second hat trick by a Paladin since the 2009 campaign. The forward poked in a Danny Kierath cross at 15:07 to open his account before scoring from the left side of the box on assists from Kierath and Guerra at 21:36. He capped his three-goal outburst by taking a Guerra pass and lining a shot into the far right-hand corner from the left side of the box at 23:39 to increase the margin to 4-0.
Jacob Garzon scored off of assists from Cameron Robinson and Conor Sloan with 26 seconds left in the first half to hand the Paladins a 5-0 lead at intermission, and Sloan opened the scoring in the second half by bending a free kick into the lower right-hand corner from several yards outside the box at the 55:02 mark.
Freshman Garrett Singletary scored in a 67th minute by cleaning up the rebound after Kevin Lingard's shot was blocked, and the rookie added an assist on Connor Hubbard's 75th minute tally.
Ben Hale and Max Fisher each stopped a shot in goal to combine on the shutout for Furman. Broden Schull recorded nine saves for the Keydets.
