Box Score Greenville, S.C. -- Senior Danny Kierath scored off of a free kick with 53 seconds left in regulation to rally Furman to a 2-1 victory over Wofford in Southern Conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening at the Gray Griffin Memorial Game on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 with under five minutes to play, Furman staged a memorable comeback with two late goals. Senior Dalton Souder poked in a Cole McLagan pass following a throw-in at 85:57 to pull the Paladins even. Moments later, Furman earned a free kick less than three yards outside the top of the box. Kierath stepped up to curl a left-footed shot into the lower right-hand corner past Wofford goalkeeper Grant Wollam for the decisive goal, his third of the campaign.
"That was a thrilling way to win and we were grateful for all the fans who came out in the rain to support us," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We play this game each year to honor the memory of Gray Griffin, and it was great to have his dad back on campus to speak with our team."
Griffin, a freshman on the 2002 Furman team and captain for the United States National Team at the 2002 U-17 World Cup, was tragically killed in a traffic accident on October 11, 2002. The Paladins went on to post 10 consecutive shutouts following his death and reached the NCAA's round of 16 before finishing with a 19-3-1 record.
Tuesday's victory marked the fifth straight for the Paladins, who improved to 9-4-1 overall and 3-0 in SoCon play. Wofford dropped to 2-10-1 overall and 1-3 in the SoCon.
Furman dominated the possession much of the night and compiled a 20-2 edge in total shots that included a 10-1 edge in shots on target, but Wofford found the back of the net first in the 59th minute. Walt Stevens unleashed a bending cross in front of goal and Connor Donohue got a toe to the pass to send a shot past the Paladins' Ben Hale at the 58:52 mark.
Hale was not forced to record a save in earning the victory for Furman, while Wollan notched seven saves in a losing effort for the Terriers.
