Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. -- Defender Dalton Souder netted his first goal of the season to power Furman to a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday night at County University Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C.
After Upstate's Julian Welborn was sent off in the 66th minute after receiving his second yellow card, Furman responded with the go-ahead goal at the 66:36 mark. The Paladins earned a corner kick and Souder got on the end of Rocky Guerra's set piece to deposit his shot in the far-side netting for his first goal of the season.
Sophomore Ben Hale recorded two saves to earn his fourth shutout of the campaign, while Andrea Bonavia stopped 11 shots for the Spartans (2-6-0).
Furman (5-4-1) created chances throughout the game and compiled a 27-5 edge in total shots with a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal. Danny Kierath hit the crossbar in the first half as the Paladins forced Bonavia into four saves. In the second half, the Paladins fired nine shots on target, including a Miles Fenton shot that Upstate's defense was forced to clear off of the line.
The Paladins return to Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium on Thursday to host the North Greenville Crusaders. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are available for $5 at FurmanPaladins.com and at the Stone Stadium entrance beginning at 6 p.m.
