Furman Blanks ETSU To Earn Sixth Straight Win, 2-0

Box Score

Johnson City, Tenn. -- Furman netted a pair of first half goals and goalkeeper Ben Hale recorded seven saves as the Paladins claimed their sixth straight victory and remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a 2-0 win over ETSU Saturday night at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

The Paladins, 10-4-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the SoCon, return home to face Mercer (10-2-2, 4-0-0 SoCon) in the home finale at Stone Stadium on Tuesday night with a share of the league's regular season title and the top seed in the SoCon Men's Soccer Championship awaiting the winner.

Furman broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute. Junior Rocky Guerra drew a foul in the left side of the box and senior Laurence Wyke stepped up to bury his penalty kick to give the Paladins the lead. Wyke's tally marked his fifth goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later, Miles Fenton beat his defender, dribbled into the box and delivered a pass to Emery May, who tucked away his shot into the left-hand corner at the 26:29 mark to double the Paladin advantage. The insurance goal was the fifth of the season for May.

The match became a showcase of strong goalkeeping over the final 60 minutes as Hale made several diving stops to maintain the clean sheet and ETSU's Josh Perryman turned away seven shots to keep the Bucs within striking distance.

ETSU finished with a 16-14 edge in total shots, but Furman posted a 9-7 advantage in shots on target to hand the Bucs their first home loss in league play in over two years and run its own unbeaten streak to eight matches.

Tuesday's home match will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network with live statistics available through StatBroadcast. Fans can find links for both at FurmanPaladins.com.
