Short-handed Furman Falls At ETSU, 56-46

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Eric Haynes-Overton scored 19 points and East Tennessee State turned back a second half rally from a short-handed Furman team to claim a 56-46 victory in Southern Conference women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Brooks Gym.

Haynes-Overton made 8-of-14 shots and a drained all three free chances for her 19 points as ETSU (17-10, 10-2 SoCon) completed the season sweep of Furman (16-12, 6-7 SoCon), which was forced to play without senior All-SoCon forward Cierra Carter, the Paladins' leading scorer who missed the contest to attend a funeral.

ETSU outscored Furman 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 28-18 halftime lead.

The Bucs opened the second half with an 11-5 spurt to extend their advantage to 39-23 three minutes into the third period before the Paladins answered with a 14-0 run over the remainder of the quarter to pull to within 39-37 following a basket by Stephania Oramas. That would be as close as Furman would get, however, as ETSU ended their over seven-minute scoring drought with Brittany Snowden layup 12 seconds into the fourth quarter.

Furman got within four on two more occasions before ETSU fashioned a 6-0 run to go up 52-42 following a pair Snowden free throws with 4:19 to go.

Oramas paced Furman with 15 points and seven assists, and freshman Tyah Hunter contributed a season high 10 points.  DeAnneisha Jackson topped all rebounders with 11 caroms.

The Paladins suffered 21 turnovers in the contest and shot 35.4 percent from the field (17x48), making just one 1-of-14 shot from 3-point range.

Furman plays its regular season finale next Saturday versus Wofford in a 2:00 p.m. contest in Timmons Arena.
