Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Le'Jzae Davidson drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 1.9 seconds left in the game to lift Furman past UNCG, 55-54, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday evening at Timmons Arena.
Davidson's game winning trey capped a dramatic final two minutes that saw Furman (14-11, 4-6 SoCon) erase a four-point deficit to the post the victory and earn the Paladins the hard-fought season series split with UNCG (10-15, 4-6 SoCon), which claimed the first meeting, 76-74, in double overtime on Jan. 13.
The triumph was also Furman's ninth straight over UNCG in Greenville.
After Nadine Soliman ripped the cords on a 3-pointer from the right wing to give UNCG a 54-50 lead with two minutes to go, the Spartans' Alexus Willey missed a pair of free throws, and Furman's Cierra Carter took advantage, converting a layup with 51 seconds remaining to pull the Paladins to within 54-52.
Following a Te'ja Twitty miss, Furman was awarded the rebound with 22 seconds to go after an officials' review. DeAnneisha Jackson's baseline driving lauyup failed to go down, but teammate Celena Taborn secured the rebound with six seconds to go. Following a timeout, the Paladins inbounded the ball to Davidson on the right wing, where the sophomore guard elevated for her third 3-pointer of the game to give Furman the 55-54 lead with 1.9 seconds to go.
After another timeout UNCG got the ball into Soliman's hands, but her heavily defended 3-pointer from the top of the circle missed badly. The sophomore from Cairo, Egypt, led all scorers with 22 points.
Furman used a strong second quarter to take a 32-26 lead into halftime. It didn't last, however, as UNCG outscored the Paladins 19-11 in the third period to go up 45-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Paladins held the Spartans scoreless over the first five minutes of the final period and led 50-45 before UNCG answered with a 9-0 run to go up 54-50 following Soliman's trey at the 2:00 mark. Carter's layup with less than a minute to go halted Furman's over five-minute scoreless streak and set the stage for Davidson's game deciding 3-pointer.
Davidson finished with 13 points, and Taborn added 11 points and eight rebounds.
UNCG, the SoCon's top rebounding team, almost won the game on second chance points, posting a 19-11 advantage in offensive rebounds that led to a 15-8 scoring advantage on the extended possessions. Furman's final second chance basket, however, proved to be the game winner.
Davidson' trey allowed Furman to overcome an otherwise poor perimeter shooting effort as the Paladins made just 5-of-22 shots from beyond the arc.
Unlike the season's first meeting that saw the Paladins commit 18 turnovers and have three players foul out, Furman suffered only nine turnovers and did not lose anyone to fouls.
Senior guard Stephania Oramas registered a career high 11 assists to go along with eight points and five rebounds.
The Paladins play host to Western Carolina on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in its annual "Play4Kay" game.
