Box Score JOHNSON CITY, TENN. -- Micah Scheetz scored 12 of her team high 18 points in the second half to help East Tennessee State defeat Furman, 75-70, in women's basketball action Wednesday evening at Brooks Gymnasium.
After Furman's Celena Taborn completed a 3-point play to give the Paladins a 61-59 lead with 6:53 remaining, Scheetz answered with a 3-pointer from the left wing seven seconds later to put the Bucs up, 63-62. She drained her third 3-pointer of the contest to give ETSU a 71-65 cushion with three minutes to go.
Le'Jzae Davidson's 3-pointer trimmed the lead to 71-68 with 56 seconds remaining. The Paladins had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but a Davidson guarded 3-pointer missed, and Kaitlyn Duncan collected the rebound and converted the layup to make it 71-70 with three seconds on the clock. ETSU's Kaia Upton made one throw with a second left, and the Bucs stole in Furman's inbounds pass and bottomed out a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Taborn tallied 16 of her game high 22 points in the second half to keep the Paladins in the game. The sophomore forward converted 10-of-11 shots and 2-of-3 free throws to go along with six rebounds.
Despite Taborn's accuracy from the floor, the Paladins shot just 36.7 percent from the field (22x60).
It was a different story at the free throw line, however, as Furman knocked down its first 17 attempts and finished the contest making 22-of-25 at the stripe.
Davidson followed Taborn with 14 points, but the Paladin junior guard found the mark on just 3-of-18 shots, including 2-of-11 from 3-point range. For the game Furman made just 4-of-20 shots from beyond the arc.
Jarya Outten tallied a season high 11 points, and Kaitlyn Duncan finished with 10.
Tierra Hodges was credited with a game high 14 rebounds in only her second game back following a foot injury that sidelined her for seven games in December and early January.
Overall Furman registered a 44-32 edge on the boards.
ETSU topped its season shooting percentage by making 24-of-60 shots (40.0 percent), and the Bucs, who entered the contest shooting under 60 percent at the line, connected on 19-of-27 attempts (70.7 percent).
ETSU (3-15, 1-1 SoCon) sprinted to a 15-2 lead out of the gate before Furman (10-8, 2-1 SoCon) fashioned an 18-7 run to trail by only a basket after one period.
The Paladins appeared poised to take a lead into halftime after Milica Manojlovic ripped the nylon on a 3-pointer to give Furman a 33-28 lead with 2:49 to go in the first half, but ETSU responded with an 11-2 run to close the half for a 39-35 advantage at the break.
Furman plays at Chattanooga on Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. game.
