MADISON, WIS. -- The 18th-ranked Furman women's cross country team turned in a tenth-place finish Friday versus a highly ranked field at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., while the Paladin men, which rank 33rd, placed 19th.
Top-ranked Arkansas scored 62 points to take the title in the women's race, followed by fourth-ranked Stanford with 98 points and No. 9 N.C. State with 203 points. The Paladins, which scored 309 points, defeated sixth-ranked Utah, No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 22 Ohio State, and 14th-ranked Oregon, among others.Â
Senior Gabbi Jennings, a native of Slidell, La., posted a Furman-best eighth-place finish and a time of 20:07.7 to pace the Paladin women on the 6K course. Senior Savannah Carnahan placed 19th with a time of 20:23.0, while senior Emma Grace Hurley was 54th at 20:48.5. Junior Krissy Gear turned in a time of 20:58.8 for 65th place, and senior Grace Dwyer completed the Furman slate of scorers with a time of 21:47.7 for 163rd place. Junior Emily Lane finished 176th at 21:54.3, and freshman Lauren Peterson was 212th with a time of 22:16.7.Â
On the men's side, top-ranked Northern Arizona won the meet with 59 points, while No. 5 Stanford took second at 133 points. No. 28 Tulsa finished third after pointing 175 points. The Paladins scored 510 points and beat out No. 12 Syracuse and 25th-ranked Eastern Kentucky, along with Southeast Region foe Wake Forest.Â
A native of Hudson, Ohio, senior Ryan Adams led the Paladin men with a time of 23:50.0 on the 8K course, finishing 11th. Junior Daniel Bernal placed 51st with a time of 24:17.7, and senior Jake Ogden was 136th at 24:51.4. Freshman David Ahlmeyer posted a time of 25:00.7 to finish 159th, and junior Trenton Mandato completed the Paladin scorers in 163rd place with a time of 25:01.9. Sophomore Cameron Ponder crossed the line in 25:20.9 for 190th place, and freshman Ares Reading was 212th at 25:56.5.
Furman, the six-time defending league champion on both the men's and women's side, will compete at the Southern Conference Championship November 2 in Johnson City, Tenn.
