Greenville, S.C. – Sophomore
Isabella Gutierrez and senior
Erin O'Hearn found the back of the net to guide the Furman women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Wofford on Senior Night Saturday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
With its sixth straight victory and sixth consecutive shutout, Furman moved to 11-4-1 overall and maintained its hold on first place in the Southern Conference standings at 6-0-1 heading into the final week of regular season play.
"I'm extremely proud of our effort tonight and especially proud of this senior class," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "Our depth has been tested the last few weeks, but this team has responded. We defended well tonight and scored a couple of nice goals."
Despite being without several starters due to injury, Furman struck quickly in the first half. Senior
Jordan Evens sent a ball over the top from the back line and freshman
Jasmine Greene touched a pass to the on-rushing Gutierrez for the finish from the left side of the box to stake the Paladins to a 1-0 lead at the 16:14 mark. The score was the fourth for Gutierrez this season and her second match-winning tally.
The Paladins, who managed a 14-6 advantage in total shots and 5-3 edge in shots on goal, continued to control possession before doubling the lead at the 64:06 mark. An attempted clearance on a cross into the box bounced out to O'Hearn, who lined a shot through traffic and into the right corner for her fifth goal of the campaign.
Freshman
Nora Sampson and senior
Sarah Rinker combined on the shutout for Furman with Sampson recorded three saves in over 80 minutes of action in her first career start. Maria Mon stopped three shots for Wofford (5-10-0, 2-5-0 SoCon) in the loss.
Friday's victory upped the Paladins all-time record versus Wofford to 23-6-1 and improved Furman to 10-0-1 in its last 11 regular season SoCon matches dating back to last season.
Furman concludes regular season play next weekend with a trip to The Citadel on Friday, October 25, before visiting Mercer in the regular season finale on Sunday, October 27.
