Greenville, S.C. – Nicole Mack recorded her fourth double-double of the season, and was one of three players to finish with double-digit kills, on Saturday evening as the Furman volleyball team defeated The Citadel Bulldogs 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-13) in SoCon action at Alley Gymnasium.
Furman improves to 1-14 on the season and 1-3 in SoCon play while The Citadel falls to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
The teams traded the opening eight points of the first set as a Bulldog attack error tied the score at 4-4. The Paladins would then go on a 9-4 run and take a 13-8 lead after a bad set by The Citadel. Leading 14-10 midway, Furman recorded six consecutive points to go ahead 20-10 after a kill from Mack. The Paladins led by as many as 10 points twice in the set beginning at 21-11 on
Neci Harris' kill. Mack secured the 25-15 win with a service ace.
Furman scored four of the first six points in the second set and led 4-2 on a combination block by Mack and
Courtney Hoffman. The Bulldogs would even the score at 5-5 on a service error. The Paladins responded by going on a 7-3 run and led 12-8 off a kill from Mack. The Citadel answered with a 6-1 run of its own and took a 14-13 lead on Laura Kuhlmann's kill. Furman came back by scoring seven of the next 10 points and held a 20-17 advantage following a Bulldog attack error. The Citadel tied the set twice in the later stages with the last coming at 23-23. Mack recorded back-to-back kills after that to give the Paladins the 25-23 victory.
The third set featured 13 ties and nine lead changes. The first 26 points saw the score tied a total of 12 times with the last coming at 13-13 when Harris connected on a kill. The Bulldogs led 10-8 early off a kill by Megan Fuhr before Furman came back to even the score. The Paladins would go ahead by two points twice capped by a 17-15 advantage when Mack compiled a kill. The Citadel then reeled off five straight points to lead 20-17 on a Furman attack error. The Paladins got as close as one point four times late with the last coming at 24-23 on Mack's kill. The Bulldogs captured the set on the following play.
Furman started the fourth set on a 6-2 run and led by four after a kill from Harris. The Paladins used that start to take a 10-point lead, 17-7, midway when Harris and
Katie Murphy combined for a block. Mack later put Furman back in front by double-digits, 20-10, with another kill. Two plays later, the Paladins went ahead by double-figures for good on a kill by Hoffman. Furman led by as many as 12 points twice with the first coming at 24-12 on Mack's service ace. Hoffman won the set, and match, for the Paladins two plays later with her kill.
Furman concluded the match hitting .231 and recorded 10.0 total team blocks, marking the fourth time this season that it has compiled double-digit blocks in a match.
Mack (19), Hoffman (14) and Harris (12) all finished with 10 or more kills while each posted a hitting percentage of .200 or better. Mack recorded her fourth double-double this season after registering 12 digs. Murphy dished out 48 assists.
Sarah Turner contributed a match-high 15 digs and
Abbey Crawford added 10.
Maddy Cardenas led The Citadel offensively with 11 kills while Fuhr dished out 30 assists. Defensively, Caricia Rodriguez had a team-high 11 digs.
The Paladins travel to Samford and Chattanooga next weekend, October 11-12, for a pair of conference matches.
