Greenville, S.C. – Furman netted four second half goals to down North Greenville, 4-1, in the Paladins' non-conference finale Tuesday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium.
"It's just good to get a win this time of year," said Paladin head coach
Doug Allison. "We were able to play a lot of guys tonight and scored some nice goals in the second half."
After a scoreless first half that saw Furman rattle shots of the cross bar and the post, the Paladins (6-5-1) broke through in the 48
th minute.
Cole McLagan dribbled to the end line on the right side and played a pass back towards the middle that deflected into the path of
Dylan Lane. The freshman lined a shot inside the far post at the 47:50 mark for his first career tally.
Less than seven minutes later, North Greenville found the equalizer. Keletso Mathathe's shot was saved by
Max Fisher, but Zach Baker back-heeled a pass to Ben Mackay for a tap-in to knot the score at 1-1 at 54:06.
Senior
Connor Hubbard put the Paladins back in front with a pair of goals, his first of the 2019 season.
Brendan Weigley sent a throw in from the left side into the box and
Jack Shiels flicked a header towards the near post. Hubbard beat his defender to the ball and got just enough on his shot to clear the goal line at 58:34. In the 70
th minute,
Rocky Guerra chipped a pass to the right side of the box and
Conor Sloan served a cross inside the six for Hubbard to rise above the defense and head off the underside of the cross bar to double the Furman lead.
Freshman
Callum Holland capped the scoring at the 79:48 mark with his second collegiate goal. The Surrey, England, native evaded a trio of defenders at the top of the box before curling a shot inside the right post.
Furman managed a 31-5 advantage in total shots, including a 15-4 margin in shots on goal. Fisher stopped two North Greenville chances to earn the victory for the Paladins, while Noah Kendrick recorded nine saves in 45 minutes of action for the Crusaders.
