Mack’s Third Straight Double-Double Lifts Furman over UNCG, 3-1

Paladins Complete Season Sweep over Spartans

Greensboro, N.C. – Nicole Mack, Neci Harris and Courtney Hoffman all finished with double-digit kills on Tuesday evening as the Furman volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-22) victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans in SoCon action at Fleming Gym.

The Paladins improve to 7-19 on the season and 7-8 in conference play while the Spartans drop to 10-19 overall and 4-11 in the SoCon.

Mack compiled her team-leading 13th double-double of the season, and ninth in the last 10 matches, after leading Furman with 16 kills and 14 digs. Harris contributed 15 kills while Hoffman added 11. Katie Murphy surpassed the 1,000-assist mark for the season after dishing out 40 while compiling nine digs. Defensively, Andrea Aceveda led all players with a game-high 27 digs and Madison Gresham collected 16.

Hannah Knier was one of three UNCG players to record 10 or more kills after posting a game-high 22. Lauren Robeck and Emily Keilen both had 11 kills. Gabriela McHugh registered 51 assists. Grace Howell (23), Maria Esch (11), Stephanie Meysembourg (10) and Mandy Garvens (10) all had double-figure digs.

The Spartans opened the match by going on a 6-2 run in the first set. Keilen maintained UNCG's four-point lead when her kill made the score 8-4. The Paladins responded with a 6-0 run and took a 10-8 lead on a solo block from Gresham. UNC Greensboro answered with a 9-3 run of its own and took the lead back at 17-13 following a kill by Esch. The Spartans held their largest lead of the set at 20-15 after a kill by Keilen. Furman attempted a late rally and got as close as three points, 21-18, on Lydia Morris' kill. UNCG scored the final four points to win 25-18.

The Paladins started the second set on a 10-4 run capped by a kill from Harris. Furman would go ahead by five points four times after that with the last coming at 14-9 off a kill by Harris. A UNC Greensboro attack error later maintained the Paladins' lead at six points, 12-6. The Spartans got to within two points courtesy of a 7-3 run and trailed 15-13 after a Furman attack error. The Paladins held off the rally and used an 8-1 run to extend their lead out to 23-14 when Mack connected on a kill. Harris secured the 25-21 victory for Furman with her kill.

The Paladins recorded five of the first six points of the third set and led 5-1 off a service ace from Abbey Crawford. Furman began the third set on a 13-4 run and held a nine-point advantage on Aceveda's service ace. UNCG got as close as two points twice beginning at 16-14 when Knier's kill capped a 10-3 run. Knier later made the score 17-15 with her kill. The Paladins broke the set open courtesy of a 6-1 run and went ahead 23-16 on a kill by Harris. For the second straight set, Harris won the set for Furman, 25-21, following her kill.

The teams traded the first 24 points of the fourth set as Hoffman and Murphy teamed up for a block to tie the score at 12-12. The Spartans then scored three consecutive points to go in front 15-12. The Paladins came back by recording five straight points and took a 17-15 lead after back-to-back UNCG attack errors. Furman kept its two-point advantage until a UNC Greensboro attack error and kill from Harris extended its lead to 22-18. The Spartans were only able to get to within two points during the final stages. Hoffman captured the set, 25-22, and match, 3-1, for the Paladins with her kill.

Furman concluded the match with a .237 team hitting percentage and held a 9.0-4.0 advantage in total blocks.

The Paladins conclude their regular season on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Macon, Ga. for a 3 p.m. match against Mercer.
