Strong Fourth Quarter Powers Furman Past Hampton, 70-65

Paladins Outscore Lady Pirates 28-14 in Fourth Quarter

Greenville, S.C. – A 19-2 run to begin the fourth quarter paced the Furman women's basketball team on Monday evening as the Paladins won their third straight game with a 70-65 victory over the Hampton Lady Pirates at Timmons Arena.

Furman improves to 3-1 on the season while Hampton evens its record at 2-2 overall.

The Paladins had four players score in double-figures led by 19 points, and a career-high seven assists, from Taylor Petty. Tierra Hodges scored nine of her 15 points in the fourth quarter and compiled her second double-double this season after pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. Celena Taborn added 13 points and seven rebounds while Le'Jzae Davidson contributed 12 points.

Taborn also set a new career-high of five blocks which is tied for sixth-most in a game in school history and two away from tying the school mark of seven set by Jessica Lange against Chattanooga in 2006-07.

Laren VanArsdale led all players with a game-high 21 points and dished out six assists for the Lady Pirates. Ashley Bates had 14 points and Charlisa Jenkins posted 13. Nylah Young recorded a team-high 10 rebounds. Bates and MaKayla Timmons both had three steals.

Furman trailed Hampton 49-37 with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter before Hodges scored 11 points over the course of 4:42 and put the Paladins in front 61-53 in the fourth. Furman tallied the first 13 points of the fourth quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers by Petty and Davidson. Davidson tied the game at 51-51 with her triple and Hodges gave the Paladins the lead for good at the 7:14 mark with a pair of free throws.

After a layup by Jenkins cut the lead down to two, Furman scored six consecutive points to lead 61-53 with 3:48 remaining on Hodges' jumper. The Lady Pirates got as close as 63-59 but the Paladins posted six of the next seven points to take their largest lead of the game, 69-60, with 1:07 remaining on Petty's 3-pointer. VanArsdale's 3-pointer with 19 seconds left put the final score at 70-65.

Hampton held the lead for nearly 31 minutes with its margin never going above seven points during the first half. Taborn gave Furman a 20-19 lead with 5:56 left in the second quarter before being outscored 13-5 over the final 5:55. The Lady Pirates led 32-25 at halftime.

Hampton led by as many as 12 points twice in the third quarter beginning at 41-29 with 6:11 to go. VanArsdale gave the Lady Pirates a 49-37 advantage with 2:16 left following her 3-pointer.

Over the final 11:02 of the contest, the Paladins outscored Hampton 30-14 beginning with Hodges' jumper just before the end of the third quarter.

For the third straight game, Furman concluded the contest shooting over 50 percent from the field. The Paladins posted a 53.5 percent (23-of-43) mark overall and held an 11-4 advantage in fast break points.

Furman begins a three-game road trip on Friday, November 22 traveling to Nashville, Tenn. to face Vanderbilt at 6:30 p.m.
