GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team won three flight championships Saturday in the final day of the Furman Duals, which was held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
Juniors MaryAnn Rompf and Georgie Walker teamed up for the flight one doubles title, while Walker claimed the flight one singles championship, and senior Danni Vines took the flight two singles championship.
Rompf and Walker won two doubles matches on Saturday, defeating Wingate's Alisa Rudenko and Arantxa Gonzalez, 6-2, and holding off Daniela Voloh and Daria Afanasyeva of James Madison, 6-4. Also in doubles, Vines combined with sophomore Mary Hunter Hyche for two victories at flight two. The Paladin duo beat Charleston Southern's Anna Marvartova and Presbyterian's Shelly Ray, 6-2, then blew past Riann Hsu and Flaminia Guidani of Wingate, 6-1.
Walker held off Neila Trklja of Columbus State, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6, in singles action, and Vines topped James Madison's Michelle Los Arcos, 6-4, 6-3, for the title. Also in singles, Hyche scored a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Augustina Bigoti of Columbus State.
"Our girls have a lot to be proud of with how they competed and represented Furman all weekend," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen. "We showed a lot of improvement, and I am really proud of how composed we were under pressure today. We are looking forward to finishing the fall strong at Florida State and the ITA Fall Nationals next week."
The Furman team will compete at the Florida State Invitational Nov. 8-10, and senior Katarina Kozarov will participate in the ITA National Fall Championships beginning Nov. 6 in Newport Beach, Calif.
