Furman Advances to SoCon Semifinals with 3-1 Win over Wofford

Paladins Will Make 22nd Appearance All-Time in Tournament Semifinals

Spartanburg, S.C. – Nicole Mack recorded her team-leading 14th double-double of the season Friday morning as the fifth-seeded Furman volleyball team moved on to the semifinals of the SoCon Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21) victory over the No. 4 seed Wofford Terriers at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.

Furman improves to 8-20 on the year while Wofford's season ends at 15-16 overall.

Mack, a Second Team All-Conference selection, concluded the match with 17 kills and 15 digs for her fourth double-double in the last five matches. Neci Harris, who was named First Team All-Conference on Wednesday, contributed 10 kills, six solo blocks and hit .500 for the match. First Team All-Conference honoree Courtney Hoffman had nine kills, five assisted blocks, four solo blocks and a .312 hitting percentage. Katie Murphy added 30 assists and nine digs. Madison Gresham (13) and Andrea Aceveda (10), an All-Freshman Team selection, both finished with double-digit digs.

Catie Cronister led the Terriers offensively with 20 kills and was joined in double figures by Riley Coonan (13) and Meghan Yaffa (10). Cronister contributed a double-double after posting 12 digs. Lorissa King also had a double-double of 46 assists and 12 digs. Chasidy Sharpe tallied 11 digs.

The teams traded the first 22 points of the first set as Cronister evened the score at 11-11 with her service ace. The Paladins then broke the set open scoring seven consecutive points capped by Hoffman's kill to put the score at 18-12. Furman outscored Wofford 7-3 after that with Harris and Mack combining for the final three points. A kill by Mack gave the Paladins the 25-15 victory.

The Terriers began the second set scoring six of the first nine points before Furman answered with a 6-1 run and held a 9-7 lead following a solo block from Lydia Morris. After the Terriers tied the score at 9-9, the Paladins used a 10-3 run to increase their advantage out to 19-12 after a bad set by Wofford. Furman would maintain a six-point advantage five times with the last coming at 23-17 on a kill from Harris. The Terriers got as close as 23-20 late only to see the Paladins record the final two points for the 25-20 win.

Wofford jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the third set. Furman responded with a 10-6 run and trailed 11-10 off a bad set by the Terriers. Hoffman kept the Paladins' deficit at 12-11 with her kill. Wofford answered with a 9-5 run midway and led 21-16 following Yaffa's kill. Furman rallied courtesy of a 5-1 run and was down 22-21 after a Terrier attack error. Wofford scored three straight points to win, 25-21.

For the second straight set, the Terriers opened on a 5-1 run in the fourth before taking an 11-4 lead after Cronister posted back-to-back kills. The Paladins came back with an 8-1 run and evened the score at 12-12 when Gresham connected on a kill. Furman continued its run, outscoring Wofford 10-4, and took a 22-16 lead when Hoffman recorded a solo block. The Terriers got as close as 23-20 after that on a kill by Kelly Bossert. Harris captured the set, 25-21, and match, 3-1, for the Paladins three plays later with her kill.

With the win, Furman improves to 36-31 all-time in the SoCon Volleyball Championship and secured its 22nd trip to the semifinals.

The Paladins concluded the match with a .239 hitting percentage and limited Wofford to just a .112 mark. Furman also compiled a season-high 19.0 total blocks, marking the 10th time this season it has registered double-digit blocks in a match.

The Paladins will face top-seeded Samford in the semifinals on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Samford defeated The Citadel 3-0 on Friday.
