Murfreesboro, Tenn. – Le'Jzae Davidson led three players in double figures with a game-high 19 points on Sunday afternoon as the Furman women's basketball team dropped a 78-62 decision to the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at the Murphy Center.
Furman falls to 3-3 on the season while Middle Tennessee improves to 4-1 overall.
Davidson finished the game shooting 7-of-15 from the field, and 5-for-11 behind the 3-point line, to lead all players with 19 points.
Tierra Hodges contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while
Lindsey Taylor added 10 points. Taylor also tied her career-high of five made field goals. Hodges and Davidson both had a team-high two steals.
The Blue Raiders had four players score at least 10 points in Anastasia Hayes (17), Taylor Sutton (16), Aislynn Hayes (15) and Courtney Whitson (14). Charity Savage pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. Anastasia Hayes dished out five assists and Aislynn Hayes tallied four. Aislynn Hayes also had four steals while Sutton collected three.
Davidson gave the Paladins an early 5-4 lead in the first quarter following her 3-pointer with 8:24 remaining. After Middle Tennessee recorded back-to-back field goals, Hodges came back with a jumper and cut Furman's deficit down to 8-7 at the 7:03 mark. The Blue Raiders outscored the Paladins 15-2 over the final seven minutes and led 23-9 at the end of the quarter.
Furman outscored Middle Tennessee 10-0 over the first 2:18 of the second quarter to trim the Blue Raiders' lead down to 23-19. Davidson scored eight of her game-high 19 points during the run with her last basket, a 3-pointer, putting the Paladins within four points at the 7:42 mark. Middle Tennessee responded with a 15-3 run after that and took a 38-22 lead with 2:54 left on Savage's layup. Furman got as close as 11 points, 40-29, with 1:10 to go when
Taylor Petty connected on a 3-pointer. Whitson knocked down a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining as the Blue Raiders held a 43-29 lead at halftime.
The Paladins stayed within 11 points for a majority of the third quarter starting with their opening possession when Davidson put the score at 43-32 on her 3-pointer.
Celena Taborn made a pair of free throws with 6:52 left and trimmed the lead down to 48-37. Middle Tennessee responded with an 8-3 run and went in front 56-40 at the 4:28 mark after a jumper by Savage. Furman then scored six of the next eight points over a span of nearly three minutes and trailed 58-46 on a layup from
Jarya Outten. The Blue Raiders scored the final three points of the quarter to lead 64-48.
Middle Tennessee took its largest lead of the game, 68-48, less than two minutes into the fourth quarter after back-to-back layups. The Paladins would go on a 12-2 run and were down 70-60 with 3:12 to go after a layup from Hodges. The Blue Raiders closed out the game's final three minutes on an 8-2 run. A free throw by Alexis Whittington with 26 seconds to go put the final score at 78-62.
Furman concluded the game shooting 46.3 percent (25-of-54) from the field. The Paladins held a 16-9 advantage in bench points. Both teams scored nine second chance points.
Furman wraps up its three-game road trip on Saturday, November 30 at 2 p.m. against Gardner-Webb.
