Elon, N.C. – Mike Bothwell converted a three-point play with 3.8 seconds left to propel Furman to a 58-57 come-from-behind victory over UT Arlington in the mainland portion of the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis on Wednesday afternoon at the Schar Center in Elon, N.C.
With the Paladins (7-1) trailing 57-55,
Clay Mounce grabbed an offensive rebound off of
Alex Hunter's missed triple and Furman called timeout with under 11 seconds left. The Paladins tossed the inbounds pass into the back court to Bothwell, who drove into the front court, penetrated down the left side of the lane and banked in his left-handed shot with 3.8 seconds left while drawing the contact.
Following a UT Arlington timeout, Bothwell drained the free throw to put Furman ahead 58-57 and give the Paladins their first lead of the half. After a Furman timeout, UTA's Brian Warren crossed half court and found TiAndre Jackson-Young in the corner, but his three-point try bounced off the iron as time expired.
Mounce totaled 14 points and 12 rebounds to notch his first double-double of the season, while
Jordan Lyons connected on 4-of-9 three-point tries to post 14 points.
Noah Gurley and Hunter each finished with 11 points. The victory helped Furman match last season's school record of seven wins during the month of November.
The Paladins shot just 39.2% from the floor, but hit 9-of-28 three-point attempts and converted on 9-of-13 trips to the foul line. Furman forced UTA (3-4) into 16 turnovers and the Paladins fashioned a 10-5 edge in second chance points, with eight of the 10 coming in the final 20 minutes.
Furman trailed 42-29 with under 17 minutes left before finishing the game on a 29-15 run. Mounce and Gurley scored nine points apiece in the second half and Furman, guilty of 17 turnovers for the game, committed only one turnover in the final 11:30 minutes. The Paladins held UTA without a field goal over the final 4:43.
Warren led the Mavericks with 18 points and David Azore added 12.
