Career-Highs Fall for Furman in 3-2 Win over Chattanooga

Hoffman, Harris, Mack Set Career-Highs in Victory

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman volleyball team saw three career-highs set by Nicole Mack, Neci Harris and Katie Murphy on Friday evening as the Paladins recorded a 3-2 (22-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-7) victory over the Chattanooga Mocs in SoCon play at Alley Gymnasium.

Furman improves to 6-18 on the season and 6-7 in conference play while Chattanooga falls to 5-21 overall and 0-13 in the league.

Mack and Harris both set new career-highs with 25 and 22 kills, respectively, while Murphy dished out a career-best 64 assists. Mack compiled her team-leading 11th double-double this season after finishing with 11 digs while Murphy added her fifth double-double on 11 digs. Sarah Turner matched her career-high with 15 digs. Courtney Hoffman contributed 15 kills while Andrea Aceveda tallied 14 digs.

Harris (.571), Hoffman (.387) and Mack (.340) all concluded the match hitting over .300.

Maia Rackel led the Mocs offensively with 25 kills and was joined in double-figures by Dani Szczepanski (17) and Gylian Finch (14). Maddie Halsey posted 55 assists and eight digs. Megan Kaufman had a match-high 22 digs.

The first set featured 10 ties and five lead changes with eight of the ties coming within the opening 16 points. Madison Gresham evened the score at 8-8 early with her kill. The Paladins followed with a 5-2 run and went ahead 13-10 on a kill by Mack, forcing Chattanooga into a timeout. Furman led by three points twice after that with the last coming at 20-17 when Mack connected on a kill. The Mocs responded with a 7-1 run and took a 24-21 lead on Rackel's kill. Chattanooga won the set, 25-22, two plays later.

The Paladins jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the second set following an attack error by the Mocs. Chattanooga responded with a 12-4 run and went in front 16-13 off a kill from Rackel. After Furman rallied to tie the score at 17-17, the Mocs recorded six of the next nine points to lead 23-20 when Szczepanski connected on a kill. The Paladins came back, courtesy of a 5-1 run, to sit at set point, 25-24, following a Chattanooga attack error. Mack won the set for Furman, 27-25, with her kill.

The third set saw the score tied a total of 11 times with seven coming in the first 20 points. Mack gave the Paladins an early 5-3 lead with her kill. After Harris' kill tied the score at 10-10, Furman went on a 5-2 run to hold a 15-12 lead off a solo block from Hoffman. The Mocs responded with an 8-2 run and led 20-17. A solo block by Mack capped a 6-3 run for the Paladins as they came back to even the score at 23-23. Chattanooga scored the next two points, off kills by Szczepanski, for the 25-23 victory.

Furman came out to begin the fourth set with a 9-3 run and led by as many as seven points, 13-6, off a bad set by the Mocs. The Paladins led by seven points two more times beginning at 18-11 on an unassisted kill from Murphy. Two plays later, Mack kept the margin at seven, 19-12, with her kill. Chattanooga rallied with a 9-2 run to tie the score at 21-21. Furman closed out the set scoring the last four points to win 25-21 capped by Harris' kill.

The Paladins started the fifth set compiling five of the first six points and led by four on Hoffman's kill. The Mocs then picked up three of the following four points and cut Furman's lead down to 6-4. The Paladins answered with four straight points to go ahead 10-4 following Hoffman's kill. After Chattanooga picked up a point on the next play, Furman limited the Mocs to just two points the rest of the way. Gresham captured the set, 15-7, and match, 3-2, for the Paladins with her kill.

Furman concluded the match with a season-high .339 hitting percentage and tallied 10.0 total team blocks, marking the seventh time this season it has finished with double-digit blocks.

The Paladins play their final home match of the season on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. against Samford.
