Richmond, Va. – Le'Jzae Davidson was one of four Paladins to score in double figures as her game-high 18 points helped lead the Furman women's basketball team to its third consecutive victory with a 70-69 win over the Richmond Spiders on Sunday evening at the Robins Center.
Furman improves to 6-3 on the season while Richmond drops to 6-4 overall.
Davidson scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half and connected on five 3-point attempts.
Tierra Hodges contributed her team-leading fourth double-double of the season on 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Lindsey Taylor set a new career-high with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Taylor Petty added 13 points.
Milica Manojlovic matched her career-high of seven assists.
Kate Klimkiewicz led the Spiders offensively with 17 points and was joined by Jaide Hinds-Clarke with 14 and Claire Holt with 10. Amy Duggan pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while Klimkiewicz and Alex Parson both dished out four assists.
Neither team led by double figures throughout the entire contest that featured 15 ties and 10 lead changes.
Richmond held a 63-57 advantage with 6:34 remaining in the contest before Hodges and Davidson combined for seven straight points over the next 1:19 to give the Paladins a 64-63 lead. The Spiders then used a 7-1 run to go back ahead 67-64 with 3:18 left on a 3-pointer by Holt. Davidson gave Furman the lead for good with 1:30 remaining when she was fouled attempting a 3-pointer. Davidson made all three attempts to put the Paladins in front 70-69.
The teams did not score for the final 1:29 as Richmond missed two free throws with two seconds remaining to secure the one-point victory for Furman.
The Paladins started the game on an 11-3 run over a stretch of 4:43 and took an eight-point lead on a Petty 3-pointer. Another 3-pointer by Petty at the 3:15 mark kept Furman's lead at seven points, 18-11. The Spiders scored the final six points to cut the Paladins lead down to 18-17 at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter featured six ties as Furman led by as many as three points, 29-26, with 7:05 left on a 3-pointer from Davidson. With the score tied at 35-35, Richmond got a layup from Duggan and a 3-pointer by Klimkiewicz to go in front 40-35 with 1:07 left. Manojlovic knocked down a 3-pointer with 40 seconds to go sending the Paladins into halftime trailing 40-38.
It was a tightly contested game in the third quarter with neither team holding a lead of greater than three points. Furman used a 6-1 run to start the second half to take a 44-41 lead with 8:29 remaining on Davidson's 3-pointer. The Spiders led by three points twice starting at 49-46 with 5:34 to go after a 3-point play by Elaina Chapman. Hinds-Clarke kept the lead at three points, 51-48, less than a minute later with a pair of free throws. The Paladins scored the final three points of the quarter at the free throw line from Hodges and Petty. Petty's free throw with 1:48 left evened the score at 53-53.
Furman concluded the game shooting 25-of-51 (49.0 percent) from the field.
The Paladins return to action on Sunday, December 15 when they head to Athens, Ga. to take on the Georgia Lady Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
