Box Score Asheville, N.C. -- Junior Jordan Lyons poured in 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting from three-point range to lead third-seeded Furman to an 85-74 victory over No. 6 seed Mercer in the quarterfinal round of the Ingles Southern Conference Men's Basketball Championship presented by General Shale Saturday night at the U.S. Cellular Center in Asheville, N.C.
With its school-record 25th victory of the season, Furman (25-6) advanced to face No. 2 seed UNCG in the semifinal round on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. The winner of Sunday's game will take on the Wofford-ETSU winner in the championship game on Monday at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN.
Trailing 47-46 with under 15:30 to play, Furman embarked on a 17-2 run to regain the lead and take control of the game. Lyons buried three triples during the decisive spurt and senior Matt Rafferty capped the run with a free throw at the 11-minute mark to extend the Paladin lead to 63-49.
Furman upped its lead to 15 minute before Mercer made a late run to cut the lead to 81-72 with 1:09 to play, but Andrew Brown connected on all four of his free throw attempts in the final 41 seconds to finish off the victory.
The Paladins shot 50% from the field and connected on 15-of-38 three-point tries, including seven from Lyons, which tied for the fifth most three-point makes in school history. Furman posted a 33-28 edge on the glass and outscored the Bears 14-5 on second chance opportunities.
Brown tallied 14 points, Rafferty scored 12 and Noah Gurley added 10 to join Lyons in double figures. Rafferty grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out five assists. Alex Hunter, Clay Mounce and Tre Clark netted eight points apiece, while Hunter dished out a team-best seven assists.
Jaylen Stowe scored 16 points to lead four Bears in double figures. Mercer shot 51% and managed a 42-28 advantage in points in the paint, but the Bears connected on just 4-of-16 three-point attempts.
Furman led by as many as nine points in the first half before Mercer trimmed the margin to 39-36 at intermission. The Bears opened the second half on an 11-7 run to grab the lead prior to Furman grabbing the lead for good with its 17-2 run.
