GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Five Furman student-athletes are among 78 inductees into the university's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa for the 2018-19 school year, it has been announced.
Carris Campbell, a standout member of Furman's volleyball program, was joined by football's Wade Smith, women's soccer's Stephanie Arrington, softball's Lauren Duggar, women's tennis player Danni Vines in helping comprise this year's class of inductees.
Founded in 1776 during the American Revolution, Phi Beta Kappa celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters induct the most outstanding students at America's leading colleges and universities, and only about 10 percent of the nation's institutions of higher education have Phi Beta Kappa chapters.
The Gamma Chapter of South Carolina was established at Furman in 1973.
Students are considered for election to Phi Beta Kappa on the basis of scholarly achievements in the liberal arts and sciences, broad cultural interests, and good character.
Campbell, a native of Nashville, Tenn., played in 101 matches in her career, registered 649 kills, and finished seventh in Furman history in career hitting percentage at .307. A Latin major who graduated in May with a 3.92 grade point average, she was a three-time SoCon Academic All-Southern Conference team honoree, four-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll member, and 2019 recipient of the SoCon Commissioner's Medal. She was also a second team All-SoCon selection and served on Furman's SAAC leadership team her junior and senior years.
A Newland, N.C., product, and double major in math and economics, Smith was the recipient of the 2019 John M. Block Academic Achievement Award and graduated in May with 3.88 GPA. He registered playing time in 19 games in his Paladin career and totaled 12 tackles while helping Furman capture a share of the 2018 SoCon championship. He was a four-time SoCon Academic All-Conference and Honor Roll selection.
Arrington, a spring graduate with a 3.77 GPA in anthropology, played in 16 matches and registered five starts in 2018 while helping Furman earn a spot in the Southern Conference Tournament finals. The Indilantic, Fla., native and three-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection, earned ScanSource Student-Athlete Leader of the Month honors for November and finished the 2018 campaign with two goals and an assist.

A four-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll member and winner of Furman's 2018-19 Elizabeth Blackwell Academic Achievement Award, Duggar started 49 games in center field and paced the Paladins with 10 stolen bases this spring. The Moore, S.C., product captured ScanSource Student-Athlete Leader of the Month honors in February and graduated in May with a 3.93 GPA in health sciences.
A rising senior from Elizabethton, Tenn., Vines boasts a 4.0 cumulative GPA in health sciences. Â The 2017 SoCon Freshman of the Year, she was named first team all-conference in both singles and doubles as a rookie and second team all-conference for singles and doubles her sophomore season. Honored as the Most Outstanding Player at the 2017 and 2018 SoCon Championships, she was the recipient of the 2018 SoCon Pinnacle Award, which is presented to the student-athlete with the highest GPA on the championship-winning team. Â She is a three-time member of the SoCon Academic Honor Roll and league academic all-conference team, and was named to the 2018 ITA All-Academic Team.
