GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach
Clay Hendrix will welcome 98 players to campus Thursday in preparation for the Paladins' preseason camp.
The Paladins are scheduled to report from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. on Thursday prior to team and group meetings. Furman will open preseason drills in shorts and helmets on Friday at 9:15 a.m., add shoulder pads for Sunday's and Monday's sessions, and go to full pads for the first time beginning on Tuesday.
Times and locations of all Furman practices, either at the Bob King Practice Complex or in Paladin Stadium, are subject to change due to weather conditions and other considerations.
Furman, which returns 17 starters and 41 lettermen off last year's Southern Conference championship team, kicks off the 2019 campaign on Aug. 31 at home against Charleston Southern.
Among the Paladins' key returnees on offense are redshirt senior All-SoCon offensive tackle
Bo Layton, senior wide receiver
Thomas Gordon (29 rec., 430 yds., TD in '18), and junior tailback
Devin Wynn (113 att., 722 yds., 6 TDs in '18).
Furman's defense is headlined by a pair of inside linebackers, senior
Donavan Perryman (75 tackles, 3 TFL in '18) and junior
Elijah McKoy (91 tackles, 2 sacks in '18), redshirt sophomore All-American bandit
Adrian Hope (FCS leading 15.0 sacks in '18), and senior safety
Bryan Okeh, whose 24 career starts top all defenders.
The Paladins boast the SoCon's top all-around specialist in junior All-America placekicker
Grayson Atkins (11x13 FGs, including four from 50+yards in '18), who also handles the squad's punting (42.8 avg. in '18) and kickoff duties that saw him register a league-best 25 touchbacks a year ago.
A recent consensus second place pick in a pair of SoCon preseason polls, Furman sports 24 players who own starting experience.
The squad features 10 seniors, 24 juniors, 15 sophomores, and 49 freshmen.
