GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach
Clay Hendrix announced today the election of four players as team captains for the 2019 season.
Offensive tackles
Bo Layton and
Andy Godwin, linebacker
Donavan Perryman, and spur
Jordan Willis have been selected captains of the Paladins by their teammates.
Layton, a redshirt junior, earned consensus first team All-Southern Conference honors a year ago in helping Furman claim a share of the SoCon regular season championship. The Knoxville, Tenn., product holds a 3.68 GPA in biology.
Godwin, a redshirt senior and Jacksonville, Fla., native who owns 18 starts at tackle over the last two seasons, garnered second team All-SoCon laurels a year ago.
Perryman made the switch from outside linebacker to inside linebacker a year ago and flourished, tying for second on the squad in tackles with 75 stops. The Rock Hill, S.C., product and true senior notched a season high 12 tackles and a late fourth quarter fumble recovery, which he returned 20 yards for a touchdown to seal Furman's 28-17 road triumph over The Citadel.
A Nease, Fla., native, Willis matched Perryman with 75 tackles in 2018, including a season high 11-stop effort against The Citadel and a nine-tackle performance in the Paladins' season ending, 35-30 SoCon title clinching road victory over Mercer.
Furman will host its FanFest on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. in Timmons Arena and scrimmage in Paladin Stadium beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Paladins open the 2019 season on Aug. 31 when they play host to Charleston Southern in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
