Buies Creek, N.C. – Furman netted a pair of first half goals and stifled Campbell's attack in the second half to down the Camels, 2-1, in women's soccer action Thursday evening in Buies Creek, N.C.
With the win, the Paladins to 2-1-0 on the season, while Campbell dropped to 0-1-1.
The Paladins took the lead at the 14:47 mark as
Amanda Baker served a left-footed cross into the box that freshman
Jasmine Greene headed inside the near post for her first collegiate goal. Less than six minutes later, sophomore
Isabella Gutierrez's header off a long cross hit the left post, trickled across the box and hit the right post before she poked a follow-up shot into the right corner at the 20:30 mark to extend the lead to 2-0.
Campbell sliced the lead in half in the 31
st minute when Alexa Genas pounced on an errant back pass by the Paladins and deposited her shot on a breakaway.
Furman created several chances for Greene early in the second half, while
Grace Baghdady and
Ellie Laxer each forced Campbell goalkeeper Reaghan Duval into saves. The Camels began to apply pressure over the final 20 minutes, but the Paladin defense limited Campbell to just two shots on goal in the second and goalkeeper
Kellsey Weaver made a diving save on a Genas shot in the final minutes to secure the victory.
The Paladins compiled a 13-11 edge in total shots and posted a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Weaver finished with two saves to earn the win for Furman and Duval stopped five shots in a losing effort for Campbell.
Furman will open the 2019 home schedule on Sunday when it hosts Elon. Kickoff on Seagraves Field at Stone Soccer Stadium is slated for 5 p.m. and the first 150 Furman students in the gate will receive a free t-shirt.
