Durham, N.C. – Cole McLagan netted two goals and freshman
Callum Holland added his first collegiate goal to help Furman earn a 3-3 draw versus Elon at the John Rennie Nike Invitational at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C., on Sunday afternoon.
With less than 18 minutes left in regulation, Furman erased a 3-2 deficit as
Rocky Guerra setup Holland for his first career goal at the 72:46 mark to even the score at 3-3 and force overtime. Furman limited the Phoenix to just one shot over the two extra periods and managed a draw despite going a man down in the 105
th minute.
Furman (0-1-1) opened the scoring just 3:02 into the match when
Conor Sloan assisted
Cole McLagan, who netted his first of two goals on the afternoon. Elon evened the match at the 26:12 mark when Valdi Jonsson found the back of the net on an assist from Jean-Philippe Meibohm. The Phoenix (1-0-1) took the lead less than six minutes later courtesy of Kasper Lehm's strike on an assist from Christian Lauenborg.
In the 38
th minute, Lehm was charged with a foul in the box that send McLagan to the penalty spot and the senior converted his kick at 37:37 to send the match to intermission knotted at 2-2. Elon, however, regained the lead with a spot kick of its on from Lauenborg in the 52
nd minute.
Elon finished with a 19-13 advantage in total shots and 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Furman's
Max Fisher notched five saves, while Elon's Peter Wentzel stopped two shots.
McLagan and Fisher were named to the John Rennie Invitational All-Tournament Team.
The Paladins return to action on Friday when they travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to face the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
