May's Last-Minute Strike Lifts Furman Over UNC Asheville In Gray Griffin Memorial, 2-1

Senior Nets The Match-Winner With 11 Seconds To Play

Greenville, S.C. – Senior Emery May scored from 10 yards out with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to hand Furman men's soccer a 2-1 victory over UNC Asheville in the Gray Griffin Memorial Game Wednesday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

"The boys worked really hard and It feels good to see our guys win one tonight in honor of Gray," said Furman head coach Doug Allison, who coached Griffin before his tragic death during his freshman season in 2002. "We didn't take advantage of some early chances, but we came through in the end."

With under 30 seconds remaining in regulation and the match appearing to be ticketed for overtime, Conor Sloan took control of the ball in the midfield. He fed a pass to Fenton and the sophomore slipped a pass through the back line to May, who collected the ball in the box and touched a low shot past UNCA's Jarrett Payne to set off the Paladin celebration.

Furman (3-1-1) managed a 27-13 edge in total shots and 16-5 margin in shots on goal, but Payne was up to the task for UNCA (1-2-1) recording 14 saves. Tied 1-1 at the half, both teams produced numerous chances to take the lead in the second half with Asheville's Izaiah Vignali hammering a shot off of the crossbar and Furman forcing Payne into eight saves over the final 45 minutes before May collected the match-winning score.

The Paladins grabbed the first half lead just 61 seconds into the match as May, who was selected as the player of the game by Gray Griffin's father, Al Griffin, picked out Shaun-Chris Joash near the top of the box and the freshman lined a shot into the right side of the net for his second goal in three career matches. UNCA equalized in the 14th minute. Defender Dino Dziergas curled a cross into the box from the left wing and Tyson Hichman chested the pass down before poking his shot past Furman's Max Fisher.

Furman continues its homestand on Saturday when it hosts the Davidson Wildcats for a 7 p.m. match at Stone Stadium.  Tickets for Saturday's match are $5 and can be purchased online at FurmanPaladins.com or at the Stone Stadium entrance beginning one hour prior to kickoff.
