Wake Forest Sweeps Furman, 3-0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest's Caitlyn Della hit .500 with 13 kills to lead the Demon Deacons to a 3-0 sweep of Furman Saturday at the Reynolds Gymnasium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Nicole Mack and Neci Harris each tallied seven kills for Furman, while freshman Andrea Aceveda recorded a team-high 11 digs.  Katie Murphy paced the Paladins with 26 assists, and Harris notched four block assists.

In a close set one, Wake Forest claimed an 11-7 lead before the Paladins won six out of seven points to take a 13-12 advantage, earning kills from Madison Gresham, Harris, Gabby Howard, and Murphy in the series.  The Demon Deacons answered by taking the next four points to regain the lead, 17-14.  The margin was just two points when Wake went up 22-20, but the Demon Deacons reeled off three-straight points to take the first set, 25-20.

With set two tied at 5-all, Wake Forest went on a 6-2 to take control of the set, 11-7.  The Paladins came within two points at 12-10 off consecutive attack errors by the Demon Deacons, but again Wake put together consecutive points and eventually won four of the next five to regain control at, 16-11.  Down 20-13, Furman scrambled back, taking three-straight points off a kill from Gresham and two-straight attack errors by Wake Forest, but the deficit proved to be too much as the Demon Deacons won the set, 25-17, to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

Wake Forest built a quick 4-1 lead in set three and stretched the lead to 11-5.  Furman capitalized off a service error and attack error by Wake Forest to remain in the game, and down 14-9, the Paladins put together four-straight points from kills from Mack and Howard, coupled again with a service error and attack error from the Demon Deacons, to come within one at 14-13.  Wake Forest won nine of the next 11 points to seemingly put the match out of reach at 23-15, but Furman rallied to win three out of the next four points to stay in the game.  A final kill by Wake's Abby Krueger gave the Demon Deacons the set, 25-18.

Peyton Suess had a double-double with ten kills and 14 digs for Wake Forest, while Madeline Holt posted a team-high 36 assists.

With the win, Wake Forest improves to 7-0, while the Paladins fall to 0-8.

Furman will travel to Rock Hill, S.C., this week to take on Winthrop Thursday at 6 p.m.  The Paladins will face Appalachian State Friday at noon, also in Rock Hill.
