ELON, N.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team opened the 2019 fall season this weekend at the Elon Invitational in Elon, N.C.

Junior MaryAnn Rompf scored three-straight singles wins to reach the finals of the maroon singles draw.  She defeated Frida Cnossen of North Carolina Central, 6-2, 6-2, in round one then beat Radford's Anastasia Belyaeva, 6-3, 6-0, to reach the semifinals.  Rompf recorded a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Alejandra Morales of ETSU in the semifinals before falling to ETSU's Andrea Pascual, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the finals.

Also in the maroon singles draw, freshman Maggie Pate recorded three victories.  Pate beat Milijana Ristic of Gardner-Webb, 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3 then blanked UNCG's Sophia Adams, 6-0, 6-0.  Pate finished third in the draw with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Morales of ETSU.

Sophomore Mary Hunter Hyche recorded a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win against UNCG's Eugenia Camacho in the gold singles draw then beat Uma Nayar of Elon, 2-1, after Nayar withdrew due to injury.

In doubles action, Rompf and Pate teamed up to defeat Mercer's Mary Courville and Lauren Rich, 6-1, in the maroon draw.

"I am really proud of how all three of our girls competed this weekend and represented our program," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen.  "They showed a high level of play, and we also learned of some areas that we need to improve.  Our team is excited to get back to work this week as we prepare for next weekend's Debbie Southern Fall Classic."
