Appalachian State Blanks Furman, 3-0

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Emma Longley hit .351 with 15 kills as Appalachian State blanked Furman, 3-0, Friday afternoon in a neutral match at the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, S.C.

Junior Courtney Hoffman posted a team-high nine kills and six blocks for Furman, while sophomore Neci Harris hit .417 to lead the Paladins.  Sophomore Katie Murphy tallied 23 assists, and freshman Andrea Aceveda posted 16 digs.  

In a close first set, Appalachian State built a 13-10 lead before the Paladins scored three-straight off a kill by Madison Gresham coupled with two Mountaineer attack errors to tie the match.  Consecutive kills by Lydia Morris and Gabby Howard put the Paladins on top, 18-16, but Appalachian State connected four four-straight points to lead, 20-18.  Furman answered with four consecutive points of its own, with a kill from Harris, a service ace by Abbey Crawford, and two straight errors by the Mountaineers, to go up, 22-20.  The teams traded points and settled at 25-all, then the Paladins gained match point off an Appalachian State attack error.  The Mountaineers put together consecutive points, but again Furman rallied, scoring two to gain match point at 28-27.  Appalachian State scored three-straight kills to end the set, taking a 30-28 victory. 

The Mountaineers jumped out to a quick 10-8 lead in set two before going on a 15-2 run to claim the win, 25-10, at lead 2-0 at the break. Appalachian State again grabbed a quick 12-5 lead in set three, but the Paladins went on an 11-1 run to build a 16-13 advantage.  Furman stretched the lead to 22-17 before the Mountaineers reeled off five-straight to tie the match at 22-all.  The Paladin gained match point at 25-24 off a kill by Murphy, but Appalachian State won four o the next five to take a 28-26 win.

Kara Spicer tallied 14 kills for the Mountaineers, while McCall Denny added a team-high 15 digs.  Sam Bickley scored 36 assists in the win.

Appalachian State improves to 4-7 with the victory, while the Paladins fall to 0-10. 

Furman will open the 2019 home season on Sunday when the Paladins entertain N.C. State at 2 p.m. in Alley Gymnasium.
