No. 4 Clemson Holds Off Furman Soccer, 2-0

Paladins Travel To Presbyterian On Saturday

Greenville, S.C. – Kimani Smith and Robbie Robinson netted goals to lead fourth-ranked Clemson to a 2-0 victory over Furman in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday evening before a crowd of 2,712 at Stone Stadium.

The loss dropped the Paladins to 5-3-1 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 8-0-0.

"Our guys fought extremely hard tonight," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We were disappointed not to get a better result, but pleased to play in front of a great crowd. The atmosphere tonight that our fans created, especially our students, was outstanding."

Clemson broke the deadlock at the 61:46 mark on Smith's ninth goal of the season. Robinson made a long run down the left flank before delivering a centering pass for Smith to tap in from close range.

The Paladins pushed forward on the attack in search of the equalizer and created several chances. Jack Shiels forced a save on a header in the 67th minute and Alfredo Diaz-Santillan had his volley off of a long throw in from Tommy Kay turned away in the 77th minute with a sprawling save.

Clemson doubled the lead on the counter attack with 35 seconds to go as goalkeeper George Marks lined a kick down the left side to James Brighton who setup Robinson with a centering pass for his eighth score of the season.

Marks finished with two saves to earn the shutout for the Tigers. Ben Hale stopped two shots for the Paladins, while Max Fisher recorded one save.

The Tigers posted a 9-6 edge in total shots and 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Furman earned six corner kicks on the night, while allowing just two.

The Paladins travel to Clinton, S.C., to face Presbyterian on Saturday at 7 p.m. Furman returns home next Tuesday when it entertains 11th-ranked Charlotte at Stone Stadium.
