Anderson's Overtime Strike Lifts Furman To Victory At Chattanooga, 1-0

Paladins Host Preseason SoCon Favorite UNCG On Friday Night

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Redshirt-freshman Kyndal Anderson found the back of the net on a breakaway in the 95th minute to hand the Furman women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory over Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon at the UTC Athletics Complex in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The win, Furman's third consecutive 1-0 decision versus Chattanooga, improved the Paladins to 6-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in Southern Conference play, while the Mocs slipped to 6-3-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.

"Being on the road for four days and having to turn around and play a second league match in less than 48 hours against a well-coached team like Chattanooga isn't easy to do," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr, who earned his SoCon-leading 193rd career victory on Sunday. "Chattanooga plays a possession style and plays the game the right way. I'm proud of the way we fought. It was a great way to end the weekend for us."

Neither team had managed a single shot in the first four minutes of overtime when freshman Jasmine Greene flicked a bouncing ball over the Chattanooga back line and into the path of Anderson. The forward took a couple of touches before delivering a low strike past Mocs goalkeeper Abbey Saddler to set off the celebration for the Paladins. The goal marked the fifth of the season for Anderson and the Acworth, Ga., native's first career game-winning score.

Furman found itself under attack from the outset as goalkeeper Kellsey Weaver was forced into a pair of difficult saves in the first five minutes of the match. The senior stopped four shots in the first half, but Furman's defense did not allow another shot on target after intermission.

Weaver finished with four saves to earn the Paladins' third shutout of the season. Saddler turned away two shots for the Mocs. Chattanooga posted a 10-9 edge in total shots and 4-3 advantage in shots on goal.

With the victory, Furman improved to 26-0-0 all-time versus Chattanooga. The Paladins overtime win marked its first since Molly Dwyer scored in the 96th minute to hand Furman a 1-0 victory at Chattanooga in 2017.

Furman plays its SoCon home opener on Friday night when it entertains preseason league favorite UNCG on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium. The Paladins will then host VMI next Sunday afternoon.
