11th-Ranked Furman Looks To Build On Impressive Start Saturday At Georgia State

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Coming off an impressive season-opening, 46-13 victory over Charleston Southern, Furman will look to build on its momentum when it travels to Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia State this Saturday in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Georgia State Stadium, the reconfigured former Turner Field home of the Atlanta Braves.

The game, which will mark the first football meeting between the Paladins (1-0) and Panthers (1-0) and first of two clashes for Furman against FBS foes (Virginia Tech, Sept. 14), will be live streamed via ESPN3 and also presented over the VanWagner/Furman Sports Network via Fox Sports 1440, in addition to being audio streamed via FurmanPaladins.com and TuneIn.com.

StatBroadcast live stats will be available to fans through FurmanPaladins.com.

Georgia State shocked the college football world on Saturday with a 38-30 triumph over Tennessee.

Ranked 11th in this week's AFCA FCS Coaches Poll, the highest among Southern Conference teams, third-year head coach Clay Hendrix's Furman squad put up 509 yards in total offense in the win over Charleston Southern, rushing for 379 yards and five touchdowns while also passing for 140 yards and a score.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Darren Grainger proved to be a catalyst in the win, completing 14-of-20 passes for 130 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 25 yards and a tally.

Heading up the potent Paladin rushing attack was junior preseason All-SoCon tailback Devin Wynn with 131 yards a score.  True freshman tailback Wayne Anderson, Jr., and redshirt sophomore running back Carson Maples also contributed in notable fashion, with both reeling off 66-yard touchdown runs.

Senior wide receiver Thomas Gordon's five receptions for 53 yards further solidified his position in Furman's Top 10 in both receptions (116/10th) and receiving yards (1,829/6th).

Defensively five players combined to rack up five sacks against the Buccaneers, one of which was credited to redshirt sophomore All-America bandit Adrian Hope, a FCS Buck Buchanan Award Watch List member who led all of FCS with 15 quarterback takedowns a year ago.

Inside linebackers Donavan Perryman and Elijah McKoy topped Furman with seven tackles apiece versus CSU.

Also spicing the victory was the work of All-America kicker Grayson Atkins, who on Monday was named SoCon Special Teams Player of the Week.  The junior from Inman, S.C., booted a 39-yard field goal to tie the Furman record for most consecutive field goals (12) first set by Danny Marshall (2000-03), averaged 45.0 yards on four punts, and tallied six touchbacks on eight kickoffs.  The SoCon scroll was the fourth over the last six games.

Furman's win over Charleston Southern was its fifth straight and seventh in the last eight games dating back to last year when the Paladins claimed a share of the 2018 SoCon Championship.
