Johnson City, Tenn. – Celena Taborn's first double-double of the season led five Paladins in double figures on Thursday evening as the Furman women's basketball team won its fourth straight game with an 81-62 victory over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers at Brooks Gym.
The Paladins, who have also won three consecutive SoCon games, improve to 12-5 on the season and 3-0 in league play. With the loss, East Tennessee State drops to 6-12 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Taborn finished the game 5-of-9 shooting and recorded 15 points while grabbing a season-high 10 rebounds.
Sutton West set a new career-high with 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting overall and at the free throw line.
Milica Manojlovic also had 12 points and six assists.
Le'Jzae Davidson poured in 11 points and
Taylor Petty 10.
Tierra Hodges just missed on her sixth straight double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
E'Lease Stafford led the Buccaneers offensively with a game-high 23 points and was joined by Micah Scheetz with 12. Gabby Brown pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Scheetz and Jada Craig both dished out four assists.
Furman outscored East Tennessee State 22-11 in the fourth quarter highlighted by an 11-0 run midway that lasted just over two minutes. Davidson capped off the run with a 3-pointer as the Paladins built an 81-59 lead, their largest of the game, with 1:44 remaining. Furman led by double figures for the entire period with the Buccaneers only getting as close as 11 points twice. The Paladins held a 70-59 advantage with 4:24 to go before going on their 11-0 run.
East Tennessee State used a 9-4 run to end the first half trailing 36-35 at halftime. Furman limited the Buccaneers to just six points over the first 6:27 of the third quarter while increasing its lead out to 53-41 at the 3:33 mark following a layup by Hodges. East Tennessee State responded with a 10-2 run to cut its deficit down to 55-51 with 23 seconds left. The Paladins closed out the quarter strong with the final four points and led 59-51 after Taborn's last-second layup.
The Buccaneers led just once in the contest coming at 5-3 less than three minutes into the contest on a 3-pointer from Stafford. Davidson answered less than a minute later with a 3-pointer to give Furman a lead it would not give up the remainder of the game.
The Paladins concluded the contest shooting 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field while making 20-of-23 (87.0 percent) free throw attempts. Furman also held a 38-30 advantage in rebounding.
The Paladins recorded 42 points in the paint and converted 17 offensive rebounds into 23 second chance points. Furman also forced East Tennessee State into 10 turnovers leading to 18 points.
The Paladins travel to Chattanooga on Saturday afternoon for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
