Greenville, S.C. – Tierra Hodges recorded her team-leading seventh double-double of the season on Thursday evening, while
Le'Jzae Davidson added 12 points, to lead the Furman women's basketball team to a 62-43 non-conference victory over the Newberry College Wolves at Timmons Arena.
With the win, Furman improves to 9-5 on the season.
Hodges finished the game shooting 6-of-10 from the field to register her third consecutive double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds. Davidson tied Hodges for the team-lead with 12 points. Hodges and Davidson both had a team-high three steals.
Taylor Petty poured in nine points while
Milica Manojlovic contributed six points, six assists and four rebounds.
Kelsey McDermott led Newberry offensively with nine points and Mylaysia Gates pulled down eight rebounds. Six different players collected one assist.
The Paladins limited the Wolves to just seven points in the third quarter on 2-of-10 shooting and built a double-digit lead midway. Furman started the second half on an 8-0 run and did not allow a Newberry field goal until the 5:17 mark. Davidson's layup with 5:50 remaining extended the Paladins' lead out to 36-25.
Lindsey Taylor put Furman ahead by 12 points, 41-29, with 1:44 left after making 1-of-2 free throws. The Paladins led 43-32 heading to the fourth quarter.
Furman continued its strong defensive play in the final period allowing the Wolves to just one field goal during the first 4:01. A layup by Hodges at the 7:23 mark increased the Paladins lead out to 48-34. After Newberry cut its deficit down to 52-43 with 3:40 to go, Furman closed out the game on a 10-0 run.
Beatriz Mateo knocked down a jumper with 25 seconds remaining to put the final score at 62-43.
The Wolves led for most of the first half and held their largest lead of the game with 3:20 left in the first quarter at 11-6 on a 3-pointer by McDermott. A pair of free throws from Gates with 54 seconds to go kept Newberry ahead by five, 13-8. The Wolves led 13-11 after the first quarter.
The Paladins opened the second quarter by quickly tying the game at 13-13 on
Celena Taborn's layup. Newberry responded with five straight points and went back in front, 18-13, at the 9:10 mark after a layup by McDermott. The score would be tied three times over a stretch of nearly five minutes with the last coming at 23-23 with 2:27 remaining. Davidson scored the final five points of the half on a 3-pointer and layup to give Furman a 28-25 lead at halftime.
The Paladins concluded the game shooting 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field while limiting the Wolves to 27.6 percent (16-of-58) overall and 4-of-21 (19.0 percent) behind the 3-point line.
Furman held a 38-16 advantage in points in the paint, 13-11 in points off turnovers and 4-2 in fast break points. Both teams finished with 11 second chance points.
The Paladins open SoCon play on Thursday, January 9 when they host Mercer at 7 p.m.
