Greenville, S.C. – Furman women's soccer has signed Helen Gutierrez and Madison Luckett to join the Paladin program for the fall of 2021, it was announced this week by head coach
Andrew Burr.
"We are thrilled to add Helen and Madison to the Furman family," said Burr. "Both represent excellent fits for our program, both athletically and academically, and have the opportunity to be positive impacts for us on and off the field."
Gutierrez, the sister of current Paladin and All-Southern Conference standout
Isabella Gutierrez, is a senior at Statesboro High School and a standout for her GA Impact club team. The Statesboro, Ga., product has traveled with the ODP Region III team to Costa Rica, Bacon Raton, Fla., and Phoenix, Ariz., in recent years, but had her 2019-20 club season cut short due to knee injuries. She also captained the ODP 2003 Region III team in 2017-18.
"Helen is in attacking minded player who has the vision and the ability to score goals," said Burr. "Having her join the Furman family has a special meaning as she will be playing with her older sister, Bella."
Last year, Gutierrez helped GA Impact win Georgia State Cup and national league titles, while reaching the regional finals in Baton Rouge, La. She earned team MVP honors and all-region honors in her last season of high school soccer as a sophomore.
Luckett, a native of Asheville, N.C., is a senior at T.C. Roberson High School. In two full seasons of prep competition, Luckett has guided her school to a pair of Western Mountain 3A Conference championships, a North Carolina 3A semifinals appearance as a freshman and state runner-up finish as a sophomore. A two-time all-region choice, Luckett garnered NCSCA All-State honors in 2019 and Asheville Citizen Times Western North Carolina Player of the Year honors after totaling 26 goals and 20 assists.
"Madison is an athletic player and a solid, all-around performer who can play multiple positions," Burr said. "Her strength will be at defender, but we are excited to see how she develops over her four-year career at Furman."
Luckett plays her club soccer for Greenville-based Carolina Elite Soccer Academy and helped CESA to the ECNL National U-16 North American Cup Championship in 2019. A member of the ODP Region III team, she also was selected for Generation Adidas U.S. Olympique in Lyonnaise in Lyon, France, in 2019.
Furman posted a 14-6-1 overall record and claimed the Southern Conference regular season title with a 7-1-1 league mark this past season. The Paladins are set to return seven starters next season, including All-SoCon selections
Jasmine Greene,
Isabella Gutierrez and
Kyndal Anderson.
