GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach
Clay Hendrix announced today that
Elijah McKoy and
Hamp Sisson have been elected team captains for the Paladins' upcoming season.
McKoy is a senior outside linebacker from Rome, Ga., while Sisson is a redshirt sophomore quarterback from Birmingham, Ala.
"I'm really excited about the election of Elijah and Hamp as captains by their teammates," said Hendrix on Thursday. Â "They are great young men who do a tremendous job in representing our football team and Furman University. Â We will likely add a couple more (captains) before we kick off the season in February."
McKoy has registered playing time in 35 games and made 27 starts at linebacker in his Paladin career, racking up 236 tackles and 10 tackles for-loss. Â He earned Southern Conference All-Freshman Team honors in 2017 after totaling 64 stops, including seven tackles and two pass breakups in his career starting debut, a 45-14 road victory over Colgate. Â A business administration major, he was named to the 2020 SoCon Academic Honor Roll.
Sisson saw his first significant action in 2019, appearing in 10 games and making a pair of late season starts.  He came off the bench to rally Furman from a 9-0 second quarter deficit to a 35-20 road triumph over Chattanooga, passing for 99 yards and a touchdown while tacking on 52 rushing yards and a score — a performance that netted him SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week honors.  He is a two-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection and holds a 4.00 grade point average.
The Paladins open their 2021 spring campaign on Feb. 20 at home versus Western Carolina.
Furman is coming off an 8-5 season in 2019 that included an at-large berth to the NCAA FCS playoffs.
