Furman Runs Away From Samford, 86-71; Paladins Earn Sixth Straight Victory

Paladins Host Chattanooga On Saturday At 4:30 P.M.

Birmingham, Ala. – Junior Clay Mounce scored a season-high 25 points and Furman connected on 14-of-26 three-point attempts en route to its sixth straight win with an 86-71 victory at Samford in Southern Conference men's basketball action Wednesday evening at the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With their ninth true road win of the season, the first place Paladins improved to 21-5 overall and 11-2 in league play. Samford dropped its 11th straight game to fall to 8-19 overall and 2-11 in the SoCon.
 
Furman overcame and early 5-0 deficit with a 13-0 run and never trailed again to win for the 11th time in its last 12 SoCon road contests. The Paladins led 42-35 at the half and used a 12-1 second half run to build a 62-43 advantage on Mounce's triple with 12:25 to play. Samford cut the margin back to 16 points, but Jordan Lyons capped a 12-2 spurt with a four-point play to push the margin to 78-54 with 5:41 remaining to put the game out of reach.
 
Mounce made 9-of-12 shots from the floor, including 5-of-7 beyond the arc, to score his game-high 25 points. Mike Bothwell came off of the bench to tally 15 points and dish out four assists, while Lyons added 14 points. Alex Hunter and Noah Gurley scored 12 points apiece. Hunter handed out seven assists for the second time in two meetings against the Bulldogs this season.
 
Furman shot 51.7% from the field and 53.8% from three-point range. The Paladins forced 20 Samford turnovers and posted a 35-7 edge in points off of turnovers.
 
Samford shot just 42.6% from the field and only 4-for-11 from three. Brandon Austin led four Bulldogs in double figures with 21 points. Jalen Dupree scored 16 points and Josh Sharkey and Robert Allen contributed 12 apiece.
